Hazmat 1 Question

Does hazmat 1 go to fires? Or are they strictly hazardous material calls???
They respond to Fires if Hazardous Materials may be involved .....they are not supposed to be involved in regular non HM structural FF but they do work at certain HM based Fires .....they all have previous FDNY FF backgrounds in Line Units....nobody goes to HM from Proby School.....they did suffer a tremendous loss at the WTC.

I was wondering and think they should respond on all 2 and greater alarms in commercial buildings, also they have a lot of equipment Rescue has so why not use them more then the city does?

1 of the reasons they can't do that is because there is only 1 of them. What if they were committed to a 2nd alarm fire and suddenly a major hazmat incidents occurred? They are like any specialized unit and need to be available when needed.

747 ? Regarding your concern about Hazmat operations capability at 2-2 and greater incidents in commercial buildings -- each of the eight FDNY squads is also a Hazmat Technician Unit. One is assigned on All Hands and greater incidents. Squad personnel are trained at the Hazmat Technician II level.

And so are the Rescues...Hazmat Tech II  .  And comparing Hazmat to a Rescue Co for use at a structure fire is like comparing apples to oranges .  Not even close. Hazmat is  phenomenal at hazmat ....leave it at that .
