HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS

Watching TV footage of the 5th alarm and building collapse reminded me of a question I?ve had for quite a while.  When heavy equipment (crane, bulldozer, etc) is used to remove debris at a job such as a building collapse, is the equipment operator required to have any FDNY certification or training in what has to be an extraordinarily delicate operation?  Is the operator a civilian or FDNY?  Obviously, there?s a right way and a wrong way to do the tasking and I doubt if it?s done by anyone without some minimum experience.

What FD personnel supervise the operation and what experience or certification does that Chief have?

Also, if Irish or any of the other outside-US members can contribute about how their departments operate I'd be interested to know.

Thanks.

Other than some smaller equipment which is FDNYequipment  the larger cranes & grapplers etc are from private contractors or Utility Companies the operators are usually from the company that owns the piece.... hopefully when the company sends a piece out they dont have a trainee operating it....most that i have seen are very skilled ..... direct FDNY supervision is by SOC Chiefs who have qualifications as well as conferencing w/Bldg Dept Engineers where warranted.

FDNY SOC has 2 skid steers and a backhoe which where being used and operated by SOC members at this scene , like the Chief already stated any thing bigger is a outside contractor.

Many SOC member have also taken a week long Heavy Rigging class in which they bring in a large crane and work with the crane operator doing select debris remove and "picks"
