On December 30th, 1903, 602 people were killed in a theater in Chicago. Approximately 500 people died within the first 20 minutes from smoke inhalation or being trampled to death. Building address was 24 W. Randolph, not far from the quarters of Engine 13. Because of the large number of people who were trampled to death several changes were made to exits. Previously doors only opened inward. After this tragedy doors opened both ways ans were equipped with "panic bars" This is the fifth largest loss of life in a fire, and the largest involving a theater.
