Standard Pressed Steel. Large complex of manufacturing buildings in Abington Township, Montgomery County. Just outside of Philadelphia.

I don't think this Jenkintown incident got the attention that it deserves.

Searching a 560,000 sq ft one hundred year old building while generating a water supply to attack an advanced fire in a high, cold wind on arrival is overwhelming for any fire department. Also, in this case the demand for water application was expanding exponentially by the minute. And it wouldn't matter how many companies are on the scene once the water supply is outstripped.

Life is complex. Every little thing is important- like fasteners. SPS Technologies- a unit of Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffet) Precision Castparts makes fasteners for power plants, medical devices and 15% of the aviation industry. Almost every airplane and jet engine in the air has SPS fasteners. The problem of fire caused SPS lost production now sits on the desk of the Presidents' of Boeing, Airbus, GE, and Safran. It could affect thousands of workers downstream, including airlines.

This fire is obviously a blow to the community- lost tax base, employment, neighborhood small businesses. Will Warren Buffet rebuild? and where? Perhaps Jenkintown- or somewhere else? Of course, it will all come down to the hard facts of running a business.

There are three basic ways to create wealth in a society- agriculture, mineral extraction, and manufacturing. One hundred years ago New York City was the manufacturing center of the world. For many reasons, that's now gone. Nowadays, FDNY is even running out of vacant, unused manufacturing structures to protect.

Jenkintown is now about to find out what New York learned about what the loss of manufacturing wealth means to a community.
