For those who don't know, the city of Lancaster, PA is the 8th largest city in Pennsylvania, with a population of 60,000 crammed into 7 square miles. The city is very compact with narrow streets(almost all one-way) and building packed very close together.
The only paid FD in Lancaster County, the Lancaster Bureau of Fire currently operates out of 3 Firehouses, with a frontline fleet of 3 Engines, 1 Truck, and 1 Tour Commander. They recently removed their 2nd Truck Co. from service due to budget cuts. The 2nd Truck(Truck 1) was a quint and one of the only rigs around, nevermind a Truck Co., that could make it down some of the city's narrowest streets. In addition to removing the 2nd Truck from service, the department cut it's staffing from four platoons to three platoons. The city also browns-out 1 of the 3 Engines each day.
The department usually runs around 4,000 calls annually. Due to the fact that the department is so small, the city relies heavily on mutual aid from the surrounding volunteer departments. Almost every fire that occurs in the city ends up being a multiple alarm.
