Lawrence, Mass has always been one of those tough New England cities that get alot of work. And like many New England cities, even though they get alot of fires, they have faced their share of company closings over the years.

Lawrence has 72 FF's manning 4 engines, a quint and a snorkel. There are  not too many snorkels in New England. Over the years the city has closed three or four houses, there is no Engine 1, 2, 3, or 4

Thanks Grump. I didn't know how many companies were closed. But with 4 Engines left and Engs 1, 2, 3, 4 being closed, that's HALF the depts Engines. Even with closings and brownouts, not too many cities have lost HALF their Engine Companies over the last few years.

1st alarm; engine 9,5 Ladder 4, Rescue 1, Car 21 (Deputy Chief)
2nd alarm; engine 7,6 Ladder 5 (snorkel) Car 20 (chief of department)
3rd alarm Andover engine, Methuen Engine, North Andover Engine, Lowell Ladder

Additional companies, Haverhill Engine, Wilmington Ladder, North Reading Engine.

Lawrence has seen many cutbacks over the years, poulation is 82,000 in 7 sq miles.
Engine 1 was shuttered in the 1940's. Engine 2 in the early 70's.
Engine 4 in 1984, Followed by Ladder 9 and Engine 3
This past year Engine 6,8,9 were closed, a safer grant allowed the reopening of engine 6 and 9

A few other items of interest, Lawrence ran a 75 foot snorkel from 1967 to 1986 it was replaced by a 85 foot snorkel and is still in service today this truck is being removed from frontline service in the near future.
In 1977 the departments staffing was 222 uniformed today it is around 115.
