I was on duty last night in central London, I would have been on duty monday night, but i was on leave for the shift, i wish i had been on duty as my crew came under attacks, having bricks and bottles thrown at them, and the crew had to abandon whaty they were doing and watch a building burn to the ground as police battled the rioters. I would have prefered to have been standing aongside my brother FFs, but thats the way it was. Unprecedented scenes of Blitz style blazes and mass rioting, not seen in the UK decades and decades, if not longer, splashed across the screens the world over. Very sad.
There were several incidents of fire engines gitting attacked, and having windscreens smashed and bricks thrown at crews, at this time there have thankfully been no injuries to FFs. btween 1800 hrs (1300hrs NYC) and 0700 hrs Tuesday(0200hrs NYC) the London fire brigade responded to 2020 emergency calls. Police say they have picked up intellegance, that there is a plan for gangs to kidnap a police officer and kill them.
Last night, Tuesday night, driving into London to start work, was surreal, Tuesday afternoons and evenings in London are a hive of activity, traffic congestion, tourists, business workers, people socialising, under normal circumstances. Last night, there was nobody around, other than people trying to get out of London, it was like a public holdiay.
Then as the night went on, there were 16,000 police officers on the streets of London, convoy upon convoy of police vans, roaoming the streets, nothing other than police, it was a police controled city, the first time such a situation has warrented such a response.
The calls trickled in, minor things, bin fires, rubbish fires, and the normal calls, but London was a ghost town controlled by the police.
Last night went quietly in London, no rioting, some minor stand offs, but people had got the message. For those that know the UK, the follwoing will come a a surprise, while out responding to calls last night, we saw police vans and officers in London from Sussex, Hampshire, Dyfed and powys (Wales) West Yorkshire, Northumbria, Lancashire, im sure there were others.
Its now started in other parts of the UK, and what lies ahead over the next few nights for London I dont know, I am now on four days off, so i will be watching it on TV with, it seems, the rest of the world.
