Marine 6's New Boat

Are they going to replace the Bravest already? That boat is only about 4 years old and I haven't heard of any major problems with it, are there? It's certainly too big to be Marine 6a sorcerer looks like it's going to replace the Bravest.

  Great Boat, Great Story !

I'm w/ 'Bulldog'; it seems much too soon to Replace M.6's Boat, But, The 'Wm.Feehan' seems to be faster & more maneuverable...
So, ...  :-\

It's almost exactly the same size as the Bravest, almost the same speed and has a slightly larger pump capacity, 8000 GPM versus 7000 GPM. I haven't seen the specifications on the maneuverability comparison but I think they're very close and they are also both jet pump boats. It's really strange what its purpose will be. Actually, looking at the article again it doesn't say anything about it being destined for Marine 6, maybe CV just speculated about that? I know at one time they were talking about buying a 2nd fast boat like Marine 6 to station somewhere else (obviously would also have a different designation) I wonder if this is that boat? If so I wonder where it will be located?

TY, Bulldog. It will be interesting indeed to see this Boat's Assignment. I Hope our members
'In The Know' will keep us posted.

Here is copy to what I think is the original order http://nycfire.net/forums/index.php/topic,25657.0.html

The Medalcraft Marine boats seem to be catching on in the northeast, I know a couple towns/city's purchased boats from them with homeland security money that became available after 9/11. I have heard from a couple guys that have operated there boats (although not as big as FDNYs new boat) and have said how maneuverable they are with the pump jet propulsion.
New Haven,ct got one a couple years ago, although is only a 36ft/4800gpm which sounds to be about half the size of the new boat. http://www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/nathan_hale_hits_the_harbor/

Just speculating but maybe they are replacing the Bravest because they need a spare/reserve for the larger boats, the Firefighter is gone, I think the Mckean is out of service or back up to the back up, the Kane I think was destroyed during Sandy and the Gov Alfred Smith which seems to be the go to Spare for the big boats is getting up there in age, Gpm wise the Bravest and the William Feehan are comparable to the Smith (8000gpm). The Gov Smith was built in 1961, is 105ft and has not been a frontline unit for quite some time, could be possible it is getting to expensive to maintain or is too outdated ?
Also wondering if maybe the full aluminum hull is more equipted for the winter months than the safe boat's like marine 6 ?

said how maneuverable they are with the pump jet propulsion. They turn on a dime, stop on a dime and can sit in place. They can also go into much shallower water than prop riven boats.
I can't find it right now but it was a video of the Bravest when they were doing the sea trials on it and that's exactly what it was capable of doing since it is also powered by water pump jet propulsion. The video showed it doing extreme turns as well as stopping in its length! The video was very impressive.

One of the biggest advantages of boats like this versus the big boats is that they can respond much quicker to an incident which is a huge advantage in most cases. Very seldom do you need the huge pump capacity of the big boats. I could almost see them putting one of the big boats into active reserve status and keeping both of the smaller fast boats in front-line service if they are truly going to spare out one of the boats! I was in advantages they have to be much cheaper to operate.

Looking at this from another angle,  they could be referring to it as a " FDNY MARINE 6 type or class of boat". That would make more sense and the one post that mentioned that FDNY was giving thought to putting another Marine Unit in full time service would follow along on those lines.  As was previously mentioned, Marine 6 is too new a boat to think of replacing it and to put one of the big boats out of service into active reserve, although it would be a cost saving move, still does not make that much sense, as that would reduce the fire fighting capabilities of the marine unit,  A back step.

I wonder what they will do with it?  It does have Marine 6's patch on the side of it.

There is no such thing as "active reserve" service and the big boats with their 25 million dollar price tag aren't going anywhere.  There have been some mechanical issues with Marine Six, although I've seen her a lot this summer running strong.  That boat, due to her quarters in the Navy Yard, covers a lot of ground and is very busy.  I'd bet her hours are high already.

The Marine Division is shy on spares.  This certainly will see a lot of fron tline service, and cause them to not step 5 decades back in time when using a spare.

Here's the other thing.....the city isn't footing the bill.  There is a lot of Federal money sloshing (seriously, marine division, lol) around and that's paying for this.

Hey guys, we.re paying for it  -  just driving up the debt for our grandchildren :(

Marine 6 is no longer at the foot of Grand Street in Manhattan? Wow, I must be way behind the times. When did they get a berth at the Navy yard?

Bill Feehan was a great Member of the FDNY ..... proud to have had him as a friend & as a Boss.....His Son John is an FDNY BC....a nice Honor to have a Fireboat carry his name.....NEVER FORGET.

The new marine company 6 is supposed to be in route to nyc, pics are popping up on the buff sites, I know it was mentioned earlier that this was not going to be marine 6, however it has the marine 6 logo on it. Not sure if this link will work https://www.facebook.com/groups/49428348655/permalink/10153686419243656/
Other wise check out the nyc fire buffs face book page

Anyone have any info on how the new boat will be staffed ? Is this a replacement for the bravest? Alpha unit etc ?
