There is 3-4 inservice for the 24. They all make rounds daily to exchange cylinders at certain firehouses throughout the city, they have a few vans also. The white van is usually assigned to Manhattan during the day to pick up and drop off cyclinders and O2. Depending on if there was multi alarm they go back out depending. But they all go out during the day time hours and then come back to fill them back up at the rock.
If something happens while they are out they assign whoever is in that Boro at that time. I don’t think the van ever goes. They are not filling Cyclinders at the scene like you see in other departments
MSU is bigger then just the trucks. Theres members who repair and maintain the paks and bottles, compressors and everything that goes with it. Each battalion has a scba depot. For the 51 it was at 308, then moved to 285. Not sure where it is now. The msu units will go to each depot and swap bottles. Theres usually a large crate sitting somewhere on the floor with bottles. When a unit needs a bottle or bottles, either the messenger van or the unit will go to that house and swap out there low bottles. Then when ever its scheduled, the msu truck shows up, drops off fulls and takes empties. 02 bottles are usually in the same crate. When the truck gets back to the rock, at 1 point, a forklift would take the emptys/low rack from the truck and put a full rack back. Not sure if they still use that system. Then the bottles would get a once over, check for hydro and then refill them. Then back onto the rack for the next truck. It used to be a light duty position. Not sure if it still is.
Not sure how they are assigned or s/c if each truck has a certain area or if the unit closest takes the call. But Im fairly certain I've seen msu 4 on Queens calls run downs.
