OKay the other shoe has fallen according to today's Chicago Sun Times The mayor is demanding steep concessions from CFD They include: Eliminate duty availability pay (being on call 24 hour call) eliminating clothing allowance, 7 % cross train FF/Paramedics, furlough buy-out, holiday pay only to those who work the holiday (which would be 2 shifts) Also limit tuition re-imbursement, proby time from 9 to 18 months. The biggest battle will be over his wants to staff all double unit houses (E/T) from 10 to 9 members. Current contract is 1/4 on all engine/truck companies. CFD has 61 truck companies including O'Hare. I do not know how O"Hare and Midway figure into this, from what I have been told their salaries and equipment are from the government. There are 60  trucks on the cities streets, only T-24 is a single truck house. Therefore the mayor want to eleminate a FF from 59 houses. This is going to get ugly.

Anything that those Chicago Firefighters have today was negotiated fair and square. Both parties had to agree to each and every part of the deal. Now that mayor expects the fire dept to give back. I hope those Chicago firefighters hold out and fight it every step of the way. And if there's any money problems, don't blame the firefighters, Blame the politicians. They were the ones to agree to it.

I just watched some small city mayor in Connecticut make a fool of himself after threatening to lay off 30 % of the fire dept. That battle is not over yet, but as soon as he (the mayor) was put on the hot seat, he started to cry. And of course he wanted his firefighters to give into cutbacks, but no mention of any extra change leaving his pocket.

I say fight it Chicago, and I'm sure the people who depend on your services will back you.

I beleive the union has to show the public was apparatus manning really consists of. John Q Public sees 5 guys on a rig. OK #1 is Company officer, he has to make decisions. #2 is either the pump operator (engine) or operates the aerial. So now we have three guys on a 2 1/2, need I say more, truckies are opening up and ventilating, after the primary rescue job. Get the info out CFD #2

My guess is that would be Nozzleman (guy on the nob), Back up man (the guy backing him up), and doorman (feeds the line in and conserves his air to relieve the other guys).

And, for a Truck, you get say the Irons/Can Man, Outside Vent Man(OVM), and the Roofman. Plus the driver and officer.
