i always wondered how this worked i know fdny transmits a box if they are sending mutual aid, i know the quarters of eng 38/51 have been used as a staging area for mutual aid to Westchester county.also how does everyone communicate with the city that is getting mutual aid for example i know of 2 occasions where fdny sent mutual aid to yonkers, and pelham manor(i think)? also i rember reading an article that new jersey units who relocated to staten island and brooklyn on 9/11 couldnt communicate with the commuications office. can anyone explain the process?

i know that FDNY once sent Hackensack NJ there thawing unit for a fire in the winter

They don't have a solid Mutal Aide Communications Plan. We do have access to the ACU1000's for linking radios together.  Pretty much they way it would work now is that the Chief would just be at the command post next to the IC and rely the information to the FDNY units as needed.

E81 has FDNY and NST fittings, we are assigned as mutual aid for yonkers box 3000 is transmitted and companies come to E81/L46 qtrs. and then proceed into yonkers for aid. 2 times in last 3 or 4 yrs we have been up into yonkers. Also if we have a job near city line we can use yonkers hydrants as we have the fittings to hookup. It is strange that yonkers doesnt use FDNY until last resort, when we are actually closer than some paid westchester depts. But that is another issue.

Thanks, the reason I asked is that on 9/12/01 when New Jersey units were staged for Mutual Aid at my local firehouse, I mentioned that and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. Somebody even said: "2-1/2 inches is 2-1/2 inches".  ::)

Wow, Tom, you ran across some NJ idiots who know nothing about pipe threads, and even less about fire hose threads.  I'm aware of at least four different thread types which you can find on both pipe and hoses:  NPT (the thread you'll find on the majority of pipe used for plumbing, etc.), NST (the most common fire hose thread), NPSH (garden hose thread), and BSP (British Standard Pipe Thread, becoming more common on large pipe).  There are more, I know (NPSC, NPTR, NPSM, NPSL, NPFF, BSPP, BSPT) but these are less common.  Then, of course, there are variations (e.g. NPTLH means NPT thread, but left handed) . . . enough to make your head spin.  So, 2 1/2 is definitely NOT 2 1/2!  Anyone know if the FDNY thread is one of these?

Thank you MAC8146 for the info on Box 3000 bringing companies to 81/46 quarters. What other FDNY companies would usually go to 81/46s Qtrs for Mutual aid to Yonkers? I assume it would be the same for your HOME  box. And as I understand it, Yonkers companies would go to 81/46 for response to FDNY Mutual aid. If anybody knows of other staging area FDNY firehouses  for mutual aid to or from the city, I would appreciate it. Maybe Jersey City into FDNY etc.  Thank You.

Bx Box 4400- Eastchester Rd. & Boston Rd. qtrs of E-38/L-51 [E-38, E-66, L-51 & L-61]    In Queens: Box 500- 44th Ave. & 244th St. Nassau County assembly point at E-313 firehouse [*M/A response is E-306, E-320, L-164, L-167] Box 600- Springfield Blvd. & 97th Ave. M/A to Nassau County E-304/L-162 qtrs. NFD2004 the 3000 box is for FDNY to meet at E-81/L-46 quarters and then respond as a group to yonkers and be escorted to location. Usual assignment is E-81 L46 and not sure of other engines and ladders have to look it up. usually 3 engines 2 trucks and a battalion chief go. yonkers does not come into nyc on mutual aid under normal circumstances. We also respond into yonkers not just on border locations, we went up into Oak street where a few people died and many house burned.

Yonkers and other westchester fire depts. staged at E81/L46 after 9/11 and then were sent to cover FDNY stations but this only happened due to the events of 9/11

I know that Westchester County fire departments use FDNY as their last resort mutual aid because all the fire depts. in the county have a mutual aid contract and have a list of certain mutual aid depts. to call on if they need assistance, therefore FDNY is their last resort in case every dept. in the county has a job and cannot respond for mutual aid within the county. For instance if pelham has a big job and needs mutual aid they would call on New Rochelle or Pelham Manor, If Larchmont has a big job they would call on the Town or Village of Mamaroneck, and If Mount Vernon has a big job they usually call on New Rochelle.

Thanks Guys (Guitarman 314, Mac81/46 and FDNY 6012), for your quick response to my question. It was the  info I was looking for. I appreciate it.

Some of the problems with FDNY & Mutual Aid request are:

1.  The agreements were so old, & never updated.

2.  Westchester Co. paid vs Vol departments.

3.  FDNY could not hook up their hoses to West. Co. rigs. Equipment at E-81 & E-38 was
      misplaced for years.

4.  Years back it took FDNY too long to approve a request to assist an outside dept.
Only the Fire Commissioner or Chief of Dept. could approve the request.

5.  FDNY went to either provide relocations, or for firefighting. Note the difference of manning of
the units. This did create a problem with some W.C. fire chiefs.

6.  Limited M/A does exist between FDNY & Yonkers (Bronx River Pkwy) and again with Mt. Vernon for 'oil
city' area. These responses are automatic, no permission required.

7.  FDNY responds out of state 'first due' to the Statue of Liberty. Yes, its n NJ!  No permission needed.

8.  Years ago, Mt. Vernon's Foam Unit was requested to respond to a fire in Bklyn. They had to pay the toll
      at the Tri-boro bridge.

Atlas I don't know where u got your information from but for the 8 years I have been in E-81 the proper fittings have always been on our rig, not lost misplaced or lost. And from the members there prior our fittings have always been available. We also have had fires on the city line and both YFD and FDNY have operated together and worked well.

MAC8146 - I visited 81 & 46 several times when the companies were in the 19th Batt, before Batt 27 moved north to 79 from 82. 81 did not even know where the box of fittings were. I have to assume that while getting ready for an annual inspection these 'old useless fitting' were thrown out. Years back, 81 & 52 would not respond on the mutual aid box # 3000. Over the years, that box assignment was changed several times. I also worked on the project with Yonkers FD concerning the joint response for their dept & ours to the Bronx River Pkwy. Due to political reasons, that project was not expanded years ago to cover the Deegan & also the Saw Mill River Pkwy.

I been retired now for a few years, but in my 34 years -  been around & did 10+ in HQ.

Not going to argue the past Atlas, however we are part of the 19 Bn and have been since the mid 90s or so, I think they moved back when the 15 moved from E62 to E63.Talking with old timers they were always on box 3000 however it was rarely used then due to FDNY excessive workload. E-52 has never been used on that mutual aid box. E-52 has worked with YFD on a few house fires on the city line as has E-81. The joint project u speak of has not been used on our side of the bronx, E-63 has reciprocal repsonses on bronx river pkwy with YFD units. On the Deegan it is hit or miss meaning sometimes we are both on the highway or just one agency. Have had a few car accidents and fires over the border and we just put em out. Similair situation on moshulu into saw mill and also Henry Hudson into saw mill whoever can reach fire or accident will work. Things have changed for the better on Bailey Ave.

The 19 is now E42,43,75 & 81 L33,46 & 59
The 27 is now E52,62 & 79 L32,37 & 52
The 15 is now E38,63,66 & 97 L39,51 & 61

I once heard from a FF that FDNY and Westchester County doesnt do mutual aid because some fire Dept. in Westchester asked for mutual aid from NYC and the FDNY responded and after the job NYC sent the Westchester fire dept. a bill and said that if FDNY does mutual aid to westchester then FDNY takes full control of the operation. I dont know how true this is, just something I heard a while ago.

A few years ago FDNY was called 4 hrs. after the fire started on Bronxriver rd. Soon after that fire FDNY was called by YFD for another fire on the Westside not sure of the address. Then, at another fire YFD ask for mutual aid from FDNY and the Duty Staff Chief turned them down. This all happened in the last few years.
