Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore has appointed Michael J. Kavanagh as Chief Fire Marshal.
Chief Kavanagh most recently served as the Assistant Chief FIre Marshal of the BFI, where he directed daily operates in colloboration with the NYPD, FBI, ATF and DA Offices.
He started out in the NYPD at the 84th precinct in 1999 before je joined the FDNY in 2001, and was first assigned to Engine 39 and later Ladder 16 in Manhattan. He was promoted to Fire Marshal in 2010 working out of BFI Citywide South and later the Special Investigations Unit. He was then promoted to Lieutenant in 2014 and assigned to Ladder 151, before being promoted to Supervising Fire Marshal in 2017. He was then assigned to the Chief Fire Marshals Office and later to the BFI Citywide South Command.
He has received several awards over his career, including the Deputy Commissioner Christine R. Godek Medal, 13 BFI Unit Citations and 3 FDNY Unit Citations.
