Is it officially put into service or are they using it as a Spare ? Because that's what I heard that Capt.Morris wants to do because in this video taken today shows Rescue 1 using the Spare Mack Rescue and than The Ferrara a few hours later , is the Pierce out or is it gone from R1 for good ?
FDNY - Rescue 1 With The Mack - 3/6/12
FDNY - NEW Rescue 1 - Now In Service - 3/7/12
FDNY - Rescue 1 Responds To All Hands Box 1191 - 3/7/12
I know that this was posted earlier, but I could not find it. I have a question about the blue lights on the rear? Does this light combination go back to the 96' HME's and if not, can someone tell me what color they were?

Blue is easier to see, that's what studies have shown.  That's why they've been adding blue to the rear.  I'm not sure I really understand why a different color light matters.  Some lights are red, some are white and some are blue.  They even have some amber in there.

These are the first rescues with the blue lights on the rear.  There was a change in NY laws fairly recently that allowed it.  As noted by Johnny the reason is because of visibility studies which show that blew stands out better.  The biggest reason it just probably because there are so many other red and the amber lights on other vehicles.

My opinion only but i think that the red and amber are more visable during the day.

Blue is more catching to the eye at night, when everyone has red and amber lights blinking and such in the rear.

To be honest it really doesnt matter what color you have, front or back some idiots on the road today dont pay any mind as to whats going on anyway.

It doesn't get more true than that.  With some exception, I'm going to say that the highway is the most dangerous place we work regularly.

This is my first post on this board after over a year of being a member. I have to agree 110% with JohnnyBopp, either in NYC or here in Toronto, Canada (where i work for Toronto Fire) the highway is the by far the scariest and dangerous place to be doing work.
In Toronto we assign additional trucks to each highway call to act as blocker trucks for those members who are operating on the highway. And still you can not or never attempt to turn your back to the traffic on the highways.

Stay and Play Safe to everyone out there.

You guys are not the only ones who think highways are dangerous . . . the Grand Rapids MI FD has taken an old Highway Dept dump truck, added an attenuator (think crash target), painted it red, and use it for incidents on the highways around Grand Rapids.  See the following:

And here:

They even got a safety award for it:

Think you'll ever see one on the BQE 8) ::) ;D

Hahahahahaha , that's great ! That's true also. LOL

Years ago a FF was killed near the back step of an engine on a highway near the Whitestone Bridge. I belive his name was Tony Shands I forget the engine company number maybe 298. after the incident trucks were assigned to highway box as a block. The engine company in question was putting out a car fire.

On a highway box it's usually 2 Engines 2 Truck and a Battalion a regular response to any Phone Alarm box or a EMS911-Assist Box , Sometimes an extra Engine and/or Truck will be assigned normally to block traffic , I read in WNYF an article on Highway Boxes and an example diagram that shows where the Engines go , the Trucks go and any other units and for Battalion to put up there lights in the on the Roof. I think only the remaining Ford Excursions have them.

Yep that is correct. There are no high rise lights on the pick-ups. The back bar is just an LED directional.

Saw Rescue 1 again yesterday late afternoon/early evening. They were running the new truck and it still doesn't have the word Outstanding on it.

On a side note, is there something special about the Fairway on Broadway between 74th and 75th? Caught E40, L25, E74, and Rescue 1 there last night all between 6:30PM and 7:00PM. Last year I caught E23 there.

Yeah good chow and its in e40 l25 e74 response area and rescue  can go anywhere in the boro they want
