As of January 1, manufacturers can no longer build heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units that employ the working refrigerant R-410A. This is by order of the Environmental Protection Agency to save the planet. The phaseout of R-410A will be complete by 2036.

Instead, manufacturers must build systems that use hydrofluoroolfins (sic)- an unsaturated organic compound which will lessen the danger to the climate. It is described as "slightly flammable". This is a fourth generation fluorinated refrigerant gas

The new system will need special leak detectors that will shut down the compressor and turn on a ventilation fan. Along with necessary training and extended installation and servicing, it is estimated that the mandatory new equipment will increase costs 30% over the present average of $7500.
