Rebreather is not suppose to be used for firefighting but was sent as if they had to do searches. They did not use them

I too was in the U.S. Navy and went to Shipboard Firefighting School at Naval Station Jacksonville/Mayport. I had two real fires in my time in the Navy. One was in the forward electronics are of my Ship the U.S.S. Ault DD-698. We took CO2 Bottles, clipped them in the open/discharge position and slid them down the accommodation ladder into the burning compartment, then sealed the compartment, as airtight as we could. We monitored the temperature of the bulkheads, until they cooled down. We then went down with O.B.A. =Oxygen Breathing Apparatus, and a "Navy All Purpose Nozzle", with a long-tubed fog tip to complete extinguishment. I was punishing and we had no bucker gear or turnouts. The thing here was NO ONE was in the compartment on fire. Think of Mutiple cars burning in a very large ship compartment that is occupied by crewmen. You cannot seal the burning compartment, and the compartment is very large, with high fire loading and has crew members and later firefighters in the compartment. God bless the Newark and other Fire dept. members who faced this fire. Truly this most likely was indeed, the worst fire Thay ever faced. Once Again Rest in Peace those who were lost and the brave firefighters that tried to save their brothers.

kinda surprised they didnt offer the super pumper for this. isnt this kinda what its made for?

The super pumper is not needed, the Fireboats have all the capacity in G.P.M. you could need. Large FDNY fireboats Firefighter 2 and the 343 both can pump at 30,000 GPM or more. The fireboats pull alongside the ships, piers etc. involved, ropes or ladders are then used to bring large diameter hose and a manifold up to the area of the ship/pier involved. Off the manifold the hose is reduced to the needed size and units operate. supplied by the fireboats very large pumps and L.D. Hose. Fireboats can also supply Pressurized Air for tool use, E.M.S. equipment and best of all trained Shipboard firefighters. The FDNY Rebreather units' main task is supplying long duration, rebreathing designed S.C.B.A. and equipment for long duration operations in ships, tunnels, below grade levels and if need high rise buildings. FDNY Rescue, Squad and Haz, Mat Companies and Special operations rescue support ladders companies, Haz. Tech. Engine Companies, all have company members that are trained to operate with rebreather masks. High Rise Units carry tools useful for High Rise Fires, including longer duration :45 Minute or :60 minute, S.C.B.A. for use in Standard Scott, S.C.B.A. for use in many situations. The rebreather Unit is a "Long Duration Mask support wagon" for the trained units, mentioned above. Rebreather is the unit on the right in this photo. The middle unit is Ladder Co, 20 and the car, on the left is the FDNY Division 1 Deputy Chiefs car.

Fire is still going with several decks of cars/trucks at risk. Hopefully the ships engineering crews can keep the plant and control room isolated and ballast pumps operational during all this, otherwise there will be a major risk of capsize.

These boats even in the best conditions are notoriously tender, let alone this one in a partially loaded condition with thousands of gallons of water being put on the Port side only. Hopefully if it starts heading that way they can at least ballast her to the bottom and reduce the risk of a capsize. The vessel is likely a total loss by now anyways.

Didn't see any update on CBS national news but they did do a story on Taylor Swift. However ABC did do a piece.

1 of the big boats were still there as of 10 minutes ago per firewires fb page. Deck 10 is still burning. No change in conditions.

Also, here's a fairly good video on shipboard firefighting and what may or may not have occurred. Sals a former military merchant mariner who went to the Navy's fire schools and a shore based firefighter so he has a unique perspective.

July 7, 2023

Unified Command continues response to fire aboard motor vessel Grande Costa D’Avorio at Port Newark​


PORT NEWARK, New Jersey — The Unified Command consisting of The Coast Guard, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Newark Fire Department, and Gallagher Marine Systems is continuing its response to the fire aboard the vessel at Port Newark, Friday.
The Unified Command, response personnel and assisting agencies continue to ensure the safety of the public and first responders, conduct fire suppression, protect the environment, and minimize any economic and operational activities in the port area.
As of Friday evening, marine fire fighting specialists are actively conducting fire suppression. Fire fighting efforts are being supported by fire agencies through the Port of New York and New Jersey region, both pierside and on the water. The fire is still contained to the upper decks of the vessel.
The vessel continues to list to the starboard side due to water build up from firefighting activities, but remains stable. Salvage teams are working to remove water from the vessel and counter the list resulting from the fire fighting activities.
Air monitoring continues to be a top priority and the Unified Command has deployed three air monitoring devices, proximate to the ship, to monitor air quality at the incident site. There are additional air monitoring devices setup on the west side of Corbin Street to measure air quality over one mile away from the vessel. Additional air monitoring equipment and staff are scheduled to be deployed to the west side of Newark Airport, Saturday, to ensure a greater range of air quality testing.
At this time, there are no reports of waterway pollution. Response personnel are testing water samples as fire fighting efforts continue.
A security zone is being enforced by the Coast Guard within the Port Newark channel. The Port of New York and New Jersey remains open with limited restrictions. The Port Newark Channel from Berth 18 inward is closed.
A formal investigation will be conducted to identify what caused the fire and subsequent fatalities and all parties at the federal, state, and local levels as well as the owners are working closely together during this process.

ARRANGEMENTS...

Viewings and funerals for both men will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart next week. A viewing for Acabou will be held Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a funeral service on Thursday at 10 a.m. A viewing for Brooks, Jr. will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m with a funeral service Friday at 10 a.m.

Do you have an update for this incident? NBC is showing women's golf, ABC had nothing, we don't get CBS, and I don't trust Fox and CNN. Thanx.
