Personalised Rigs

Just curious, my son and I have the Diamond Plate 1/32 E-23. This is the rig donated by Time-Warner because they have several properities in E-23 still area. However my rig does not have the bell mounted on the officer's side, when did this modification go into effect. Irregardless it is a sharp looking rig ;D

The Bell has been on the rig since '02/'03. Sadly GG it sounds like another cock-up by Code 3

I did a lot of work on Rigs of yesteryear......LAD*108 s '69 ALF.....'74 SEAG....(did not like it or keep it).....then a refurbished '68 ALF......then another '74 Seag.....all Tillers ........got a lot of "heat" form the shops for welding plates w/logo to the Aerial. on the new '74..they claimed it violated the warranty....also got "heat" for burning holes in the main beam of the ALF s to mount boxes on the side running board.....all the rest like ...lights...radio speakers....hand holds ....tool brackets .....bolt on logos .....numbers.....were never a problem....niether was paint work......today it is a different story especially  w/lighting & radio circuits......also years ago the manufacturers added nothing to a rig as far as personalization or logos......Companies with spirit did their own work.....today for instance all Aerials & Towers come from the factory w/logos on the sign mounted on the Aerial/Boom that is installed by the manufacturer based on info from the individual Unit......so EVERY Unit has a sign w/logo whether  the spirit level is there or not......no visible measure of the degree. .....i remeber the first '69 ALF & the first '74 SEAG.......some of the photographers & model biulders  would complain that they could nto keep up w/the constant changes & upgrades.....some good pictures of the ALF in Rona Beams book "Ladder 108" .......also did a lot of work on R*2s '76 Mack & '82 ALF.......a Michigan FF who was also a big name sign painter who had an interest in the FDNY flew to NYC w/his helper & completly re-lettered /re-logoed the '82 ALF we had in R*2 shortly after delivery........pictures of the different changes to LAD*108 & R*2 can be seen on "FDNYrant"  as welll as other picture links floating around......PS the one on the rant of the '74 SEAG w/ the sign welded to the Aerial is the one they freaked out over.

I did read on this forum before that Co's shouldn't really modify any rig and it was all to do with "the warranty" and if Co's did that Seagrave would term the warranty void. Is this true? how long does a warranty last on a rig??

The bell cannot be placed on front as the cab is hinged.  We are looking for info on a bell bracket for the roof.

The  bell's an awesome touch.  You can't go without it, thats for sure.  Why not place it on the bumper, but remove it when it goes to the shops.  That's what we do with the "Q" that we....um, don't have.....

All UK fire trucks in the 40's 50's 60's and 70's had brass bells on the roof, which was operated by a leather strap by the officer in charge, the strap hung down through a small hole in the roof, and he rang the bell at intersections and when weaving in and out of traffic. In the 60's the bells were suplemented by two tone air horns, and then by the 80's all bells had gone.

They were a simple 'U' bracket mounted upside down, with the two mounting points been the bottem of the 'U'.

The bell was secured to the bracket, and leather strap attached to the bell ringer. I simple but very very effective innovation in its time.

I can see if there are any spare ones lying around on any preserved fire engines if it helps.

regards

JT
