From the FDNY's Website......
Today the Mayor unveiled his preliminary budget for FY2010 designed to deal with the fall out from the fiscal crisis that now grips the country in a recession.
The news for the Fire Department is not good:
? 4 fire company night closings will become full time closings effective 7-1-09.
? 7 additional fire companies will be disbanded effective 7-1-09.
? 5 additional fire companies will be disbanded effective 1-1-10.
? 30 BLS ambulance tours and 9 supervisory lines in conditions cars will be eliminated effective 7-1-09.
? 27 Fire Marshal lines and 5 Supervising Fire Marshal lines will be eliminated based on attrition.
? 32 EMS administrative lines in units through out the Department will be eliminated, which will require those members on full duty in the designated units to return to ambulance duty and those members with Reasonable Accommodations to seek other accommodations if available, otherwise they will need to retire.
? All civilian vacancies that have not been approved by OMB have now been eliminated.
? There is a complete freeze on all new civilian attrition that occurs until June 30, 2010. This does not include Fire Prevention, Dispatchers, Grant funded positions, Deutsche Bank Task Force positions or ECTP related lines. The Bureau of Personnel Resources will be issuing new civilian guidelines to address critical vacancies.
? Security Services for Randall?s Island, Fort Totten and Maspeth will be discontinued by March 1, 2009.

Looks like some hard years ahead.  While not in agreement I can understand the reduction on the fire suppression side more than I can the EMS side.  Their call volume keeps increasing unlike that of the fire suppression side.  The only good thing I see is there is no mention of attempting to reduce the manning of units.

There is, in all of the news reports this evening, I saw Bloomberg asking why can't those 60 engine companies with the extra man run with one less man like the rest.

That sucks! Looks like the beginning of the 70's when the Bronx burned up. Fire Duty going up, multi multiple alarms and shutting down stations. Thats great. Maybe Bloomburg should help out with some of his billions. What a POS!!! Pray no brothers get hurt cuz of this.

Maybe he should spend a few shifts running with one of those companies and then answer his own question!

yes, maybe working up and down in a busy firehouse would change Mr. Bloomberg's mind about the budget situation.

This is absolutely crazy. In the past week alone there has been over 10 multiple alarms.  Bloomberg needs to be opening new firehouses not closing them!

That can be done, just move the apparatus to another nearby truck like 102.

I agree sounds crazy, that is what came across his desk. L176 is almost a sure one, which is crazy! Busy truck. Can only post what I know. But he does wear a white shirt.

NY Post (Feb 2) "The city's famous groundhog Charles G. Hogg took a bite out of Bloomberg's hand during this morning's annual ceremony at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton".

May the groundhog be fruitful and multiply!  ;)

Some of these like E4, E46, either E71 or E83 (not both), and E205 make sense but there are other units that the city had tried to disband before that would make more sense like E14, E26, E44,(1st due to Bloomberg's) ;), E47, L8 or L9, E218, E263 and E294.

Speculating about if/what companies are getting closed is just pointless right now.  Until there is an official announcement from the FDNY about which firehouses are being closed and when, I don't see any real purpose in worrying about so-and-so company closing.
