Question about probies

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question. Down here in Philly when you graduate from fire school they can send you anywhere in the city no matter where in the city you live. Assignments are based on vacancies in whatever company you go to. In the FDNY say you live in Queens and they assign you to a company on S.I. do you get a discount going over the Verrazzano. Just curious as I suppose it could get expensive going to work. Again sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.

From what I recall they have to ask you if you want to work in the Borough you live in, if you say yes they have to send you to that borough. Otherwise, no, no discounts
 
Years ago it was luck of the draw. Usually not, living in Queens and assigned to Staten Island. I lived in Queens and sent to Brownsville, my car pool buddy from proby school living in Queens went to Astoria Queens. Living upstate maybe the Bronx or Manhattan. My 24 years in Brownsville, I learned the job quickly and ran in with some of the best Firemen in the job.
 
I would think most guys coming out of school would want a busy area. I know I did but my first assignment wasn’t that busy but I eventually went to one of the busiest (back then) engines. One other thing about Philly is that once you’re promoted you get transferred every three years. As with a lot of transfers it’s “who you know”. Firefighters can stay where they are for their whole career. For officers they tell you what company’s will be available, you then put in a memo with 3 company’s from the list and maybe,,just maybe you’ll get one of them, otherwise your up for grabs unless you have some drag with the higher ups.
 
My niece is married to an FDNY member.
He got on the job being assigned to a very busy Bronx Engine Company then about 6 months or a year later he got assigned to a Ladder Company within walking distance from where he lives.
BUT - as soon as he got a chance, he went back to that Bronx Company where he's been for a couple of years now and loves the place.
 
Last few years they try to accommodate people where they live and want to work. Keep you closer to home if possible and that’s where you want to go. That’s Fallout from the federal lawsuit.

They also have new FF go on their “engine or truck detail” for a period of time.
This is where FF who are assigned to engine go get some truck experience and vice-versa. Years ago was 30 days usually in the battalion. Then they did A,B,C where guys would rotate to three companies over 3 years all varying in “busyiness”. Then recently they made it a year detail in area anywhere but where you’re permanently assigned. So a FF from SI ladder company could go to midtown Manhattan or south Bronx. Currently they lowered it to 6 months.
After the detail time limit is up you’ll return to your permanently assigned company.
