Rescue Equipment Question

Ive been out for a few years , so don’t know the status of the collapse pods . I don’t believe the collapse pods were ever assigned on the 10-60 signal , they have to be special called by the SOC Chief thought the IC. Remember there are two collapse rigs assigned on a 10-60 signal or can be simple requested as needed. That’s a lot of lumber between just the two CR.

In theory the collapse pods are a fantastic idea. To have a few pods loaded up and strategically located throughout the city. But in reality the need would have to be a very large major incident . The pods are loaded up loaded w 16foot 2x4’s , 4x and 6x‘s.…plus sheets of plywood. All that lumber is not meant to be stored for long periods of time …it needs to by used and or rotated over time or it will twist and warp making it all un usable. $$$$. The Rescue school was good at using the oldest lumber in rotation whenever a collapse or trench rescue class are being taught , but still left a lot of lumber just to sit and twist and warp over time. If I recall they went down to just 2 pods , one at SOC Island and one at the Rock.

I am not sure, but I believe the collapse pods were assigned on a Signal 10-60 Code 2 or as was said when requested by the Incident Commander.
A 10-60 Code 2 upgrades the major Emergency response for a Major Incident. A 10-60 can and has been used for air crashes, train collisions and derailments involving large number of injured or trapped civilians, ship collisions, not just for collapses. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

its Not like they do not have access to a boat , its just on a different rig. And that actually makes more sense , the boat on the TAC rigs have a rigid haul and a bigger motor then the ones carried on the rescues. You could almost consider the TAC unit as R-5’s third piece. And I’m sure there are a few other items that is not on R-5’s rig because it’s either on their collapse rig or the TAC.
how is the TAC on R5's house staffed does R5 or E160 staff it??

- SOC Collapse POD: This is a combination company. The first part is the POD (Point-of-distribution) carrier; there are two of these, one at the Rock and the other on SI. The second part are the collapse PODs located throughout the city. Each POD can be loaded onto the carrier (a la dumpster style) and transported as needed.
