SOC is located there, so you have SOC chiefs likke the Rescue Battalions and HAZ-MAT Battalions, there are a few spare TSU trucks there, and the stuff you dont see everyday

One time while driving down Vernon Blvd I saw E258/L115 responding onto the island, so I guess it would be Queens companies. There is a bridge from Queens but not from Manhattan. I don't think there is a firehouse on the island but I could be wrong.

there is a firehouse, but it is just used to store the SOC trucks and it is also where the SOC chiefs are stationed.

Normal alarm assignment for Roosevelt Island is Engines 260, 262, 258, L116, TL115, and BC49 from Queens.
Occasionally E8, L2, BC8 will be assigned via the 59th st Bridge from Manhattan.
Boxes for Roosevelt Island are Manhattan boxes and all units operate on Manhattan frequency.

Roosevelt Island houses several SOC units including Safety and HazMat Battalions, as well as RAC4 and some of the reserve ladder trucks.

The Safety Battalion is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard with Marine 6, not on  Roosevelt Is.

Take a look in nycfire.net/gallery/fdny under special operations and you will see some of the units on the island.

Has that firehouse on Roosevelt ever had an Engine/Ladder or has it always been SOC units?

I live on Roosevelt Island and maintain a blog about the Island.  I can post pictures of the equipment that comes onto the Island from LIC as they are here quite often.

VBCapt.

Looks like Engine 49 was on the island from 1882 to 1958..

Roosevelt Island, Neat photos you have, as you are probaly aware anytime there is a call for a fire on the island, units have to respond from queens.  There are no staffed firefighting units on the island.

There are always rigs parked outside at "SOC Island"  They have a bunch of rigs there and they don't all fit in the firehouse.

It used to have several major hospitals on it.  Now it has been developed with numerous high rise apartment houses.

When the new Highrises open up, will they open up and engine company just in case? I think they will have to because it kind of a long haul from Queens.

You won't see a new Engine or Company for sometime in NYC.  They are trying everything else under the sun before they will even think about it.

I tell you I live facing into Main Street and there are days when we would see Engine 260 and I think Ladder 116 every night.  It always sounds as if they are coming onto the Island and heading down to Goldwater Hospital (just South of the QB Bridge).  Especially in the Summer it really feels like they are here all the time.

With the new buildings opening up and three more to come.  It seems like they have to add capacity.  Would they ever install new equipment at the SOC for the Island?  I know everytime the RI Lift Bridge is tested or opened the Queens house sends a truck to sit on the island in case the bridge gets stuck open.
