Sparta NC Multiple Alarm Fire on Main St. 8/24/26

Primary Fire Dept was Sparta/Allegheny VFD. Mutual Aid from Glade Creek NC, Twin Oaks NC, Galax VA, Independence VA, more (see below). Sparta is roughly 10 miles southwest of Galax, Virginia.

As a side note: Two 40 year old ladder trucks responded to this fire, as you can see from the photos. First is a 1987 Ford C/Boardman/Redi-Tower 75' rig from Sparta/Allegheny VFD, while the other is a 1988 Ford C/Pierce/TeleSqurt 50' rig from the Glade Creek VFD. Both of these trucks remain as first-line apparatus, and their age is common among rural North Carolina departments. Thanks to Mike Legeros for the photos.

Alleghany County working. Major fire in Sparta on Main Street last night. EDIT: Updating and reformatting our notes, thank you readers.

Dispatched 10:28 p.m.[1] for Sparta-Alleghany, Cherry Lane, and Glade Creek fire departments.

[1] ABC45 cites Glade Creek dispatch time as 10:28 p.m., while another official cited the first 911 call at 10:32 p.m.

Fire building was the Keller Williams building at 15 North Main Street.

INITIAL CONDITIONS

Police unit(s) was first-arriving They attempted to make rescues and directed incoming fire and EMS personnel to the rear of the structure, for rescues.

EMS unit(s) was second-arriving. They noted people on a roof that needed rescue.

Fire unit(s) was third arriving. From news reports, they found the second floor of a mixed-used building "engulfed in flames."

Building was one of a row of historic mixed-used buildings, housing such occupancies as apartments, a realtor office, a local cable provider, and a coffee shop, from ABC45.

CFP reported EMS was the second unit on scene, reported multiple people trapped on the roof. From Fox 8, two people escaped to a neighboring roof. They were rescued using ladder trucks.

SUPPRESSION / SPECIAL CALLS

At least four ladders were flowing, Sparta-Alleghany and Glades Creek at the outset. Later with Elkin and Pleasant Hill (correct?) working.

At least one deck gun was flowing, from photos.

Special calls included Elkin (Surry) for tower ladder and Pleasant Hill (Wilkes) for aerial ladder.

SUMMARY INFORMATION

Crews worked for hours, and the fire was extinguished around 6:30 a.m. From news reports.

From news reports, four apartments caught fire in the upstairs portion of the building. Eleven people were displaced.

Adjoining buildings were protected from fire walls, but suffered smoke and water damage.
