I believe that the Squad 5 quarters on East Broadway were once the quarters of Engine 31 that was closed in the late 1960s. The quarters of Engine 30 on Spring Street were, the FDNY Medical Office, the quarters of Department Ambulances (For the use of FDNY Firemen only) and later also the quarters of Satellite 1 and the Satellite Officer. Before that time Satellite 1 was quartered with Engine Co. 27 at 173 Franklyn St. in SOHO, not far from the quarters of Ladder 8 "The Ghost Buster" firehouse. The OLD Medical Office and before that quarters of Engine 30 are now the location of the great FDNY Museum, just north of the NYC Side of the Holland Tunnel. In my career I worked details to E-13, Squad 3 (In Williamsburg Brooklyn), Engine 17 on the Lower East Side and was assigned to Engine 27 on as I said Franklyn St. I must be bad luck as all those units have been closed for many years. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

I believe Satellite 1 and the Satellite Officer were at 31 Engine’s quarters before Spring Street. After that, they both moved over to East Broadway and then to 27 Engine’s quarters.

I believe you are correct above, but I am not sure about Satellite 1 and the Satellite Officer being in Eng. 31s old quarters on East Broadway. When I was laid off on July 1st. 1975 Engine 27 was closed for a short time and later reopened only to be closed again "Sadly for Good". I was laid off from July 1st, 1975, until I was rehired under "H.U.D." = "Housing & Urban Development" funding in March of 1976 and was assigned to the very active Ladder 11, on East 2nd St. and Ave. B, where I did both regular Ladder Co. Firefighting as well as "Fire Salvage Operations" in residential dwellings after the fire. The Fire Patrol still did "Fire Salvage" in Commercial Buildings. Later the "Fire Salvage" in residential buildings was done by "Specialized Fire Salvage Units" under NYC's "Model Cities Program" by Nonfirefighters hired with Federal funds. As a Covering Lieutenant in the South Bronx, I worked one night tour as the officer in one of the Fire Salvage Units along with FDNY Firefighter as the driver and the rest of the manpower civilians under the Model Cites Salvage Program. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

I believe Satellite 1 and the Satellite Officer were at 31 Engine’s quarters before Spring Street. After that, they both moved over to East Broadway and then to 27 Engine’s quarters.
Satellite 1 was placed in service at E211 in 1965 and then moved to E31 until 1967 when they moved to Spring St.
They were at Spring St until 1974, then 55 Broadway. They were also at E27 and E9.
