Just heard a Manhattan Batt request the "thawing unit", seen pics of it, just didn't know what they do or equipped with. They said an engine was frozen to a hydrant. What is the thawing unit going to do? Here in TN don't come upon that problem to often :).

The thawing units are basically heat dispensing units.  They carry a heat generator that thaws out hydrants and hoselines.

Here's a vid of one on Mutual Aid to Hackensack:

Thank you catry, is this unit used in the summer and when it is called out does the Engine Co go with it. Thanks and Happy New Year.

It's staffed in the winter to thaw out frozen hydrants, and responds by itself. I forget what the criteria are to have them activated.

When the temp falls below XXF for XX amount of time, they staff it. Two FF's from the house will run it for the tour and go around to known hydrants and respond to jobs as needed.
