Today, February 16th, 2024 marks the 56th Anniversary for the First 911 call in the nation.
It occurred in Haleyville, Alabama.
Before that we all had to dial a seven digit number to get connected to an emergency dispatcher.

These days of course 911 is the Emergency Number we use Nationwide whenever we need police, fire, or medics.

440-1234 was the predecessor in NYC
440-1234 was the brain child of FDNY's Supervising Fire Alarm Dispatcher Sol Elbaum who won less then a hundred dollars for that suggestion by the City of New York. Sol, now deceased, had won the most suggestions of any city employee, but not the most money over the years.
