NORWICH, NY (03 FEB 2024) –

Two people were killed with another person was seriously injured after a multi-family home burst into flames in NYS’s Norwich community.

The Norwich Fire Department said it responded to 19 Miller St. around 2 a.m. on Feb. 3 and immediately crews were able to determine an active fire in the two-floor structure.

The department said crews attempted to rescue a person who was found at a second-story window. However, as crews were prepping a ladder for that person’s extraction, when that person jumped and was seriously hurt. They were taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital Emergency for treatment and, once stabilized, moved to University Hospital in Syracuse. As of Monday morning, they remain in critical condition.

The department noted that the fiery and smokey conditions were so bad that it compromised search efforts. It took hours for the fire crew to bring the conditions under control.

Around 2 p.m., 12 hours later, crews had cleared up the scene. By the time the fire was put out, officials found the bodies of the two deceased adults. Other tenants in the building were able to escape and there were no reported injuries to firefighters.

The Oxford Fire Department with the Sherburne Fire Department assisted with fire extinguishment operations, while the County Office of Emergency Services, Norwich Police provided assistance at the scene. The American Red Cross aiding those were who displaced by the fire.

The investigation into the blaze is being investigated by Norwich Police and the Chenango County Office of Emergency Services Fire Investigation Unit.
