A huge fire has erupted near Bordeaux Airport, prompting a major emergency response.

Footage shows flames tearing through a building in Merignac as emergency crews battle the blaze.

Two firefighters have died, France’s Interior Minister has confirmed.

The French Fire Service is having a tough summer....wild fires are the big problem.

Although wildfires happen anywhere, the "hotspots" are Australia, SoCal, and the Iberian Peninsula (with southeast coastal France). Normally, France burns 28,000 acres on average during the summer fire season- six times less than adjacent Spain. So far this year they are up to 90,000 acres after three heat waves.

The French have an aggressive proactive wildfire policy. Aircraft and firefighters are sent to forest areas identified as high risk each day in advance. The goal is to find and attack fires within ten minutes and hold it to less than ten acres. Now, they use AI powered cameras like CalFire, and increased their forces with a hundred new pumpers, one third more airplanes, and a new 600 man military firefighting regiment. Property owners are required to clear vegetation.

Presently, there are 900 firefighters along with planes and helicopters fighting two fires in the historic Fontainebleau forest, thirty miles from Paris.
The last time this forest burned was during WWII when occupation forces torched the place to flush out the Maquis.
