Va. Beach, VA 2/19/11 Heavy Fire Activity

On the 19th we had very high fire activity for our City. Numerous large & small brush fires, 6 structure fires, this on top of our normal runs, building alarms/EMS etc. We had a Red Flag Warning in effect for most of the State. Winds were West 25-35mph sustained w/ gusts to 40+. Humidity dropped to about 7 %.

Today (2-20) we are expecting much lighter winds along with higher relative humidity however, we remain in a moderate fire danger.

Monday (2-21) may bring a repeat of Saturday with West winds 20-30 and higher gusts, along with low humidity.

We had a day like that here across the water, too, Deano.  3 structure fires & numerous large & small brush fires.  I made it to one (see the photo link).  Fire started in a small decrepit house, spread to the lawn, brush & leaves around the house.  NNFD had a very busy day.

At one point during the day we requested mutual aid from Cheaspeake for relocations however, that request was denied. They were just busy as we were.
