Some Friday/Saturday incidents:

5/18 Pedestrian struck - 19th & Florida Ave NE
5/18 Stabbing - 14th & Newton Street NW
5/18 Stabbing - 500 42nd Place NE
5/18 Firefighters responding to 15th street & Euclid St NW - person threatening to jump from the building
5/18 Stabbing - 1900 Massachusetts Ave SE
5/18 Stabbing - 835 Bladensburg road NE
5/18 Vehicle Fire - North Capitol St & Randolph Street: use caution
5/18 Stabbing - 4623 6th Street SE - 2nd EMS for 2nd victim
5/18 Cyclist struck - 9th & East Capitol Street - Use caution
5/18 Shooting (0315 hrs) - 2300blk Ontario Rd NW - male shot in back, treated & transported to trauma center, life threatening
5/18 Shooting (0100 hrs) - 1200blk Stevens Rd SE - one shot, treated & transported to trauma center
5/18 WORKING FIRE 2 ALARMS: 3818 Harrison St NW. #DCFD units on scene with fire showing possible people trapped. Went to 2nd alarm.  Fire on 2nd, 3rd floors and cockloft

5/17 Pedestrian Struck - 14th St & Randolph St NW - male struck by auto, treated & transported to trauma center, life threatening
5/17 Stabbing - 1100blk Mount Olivet Rd NE - male stabbed in abdomen, treating & transporting to trauma center
5/17 Multiple Vehicle Accident - NB 14th St Bridge in HOV lanes - 2 car accident, 2 pts being treated & transported
5/17 Structure Fire - 1800blk Mintwood Pl NW, FFs found overheated elevator motor, controlled hazard
5/17 Assault - 3401 4th St SE (Ballou HS) - 4 patients in respiratory distress
5/17 Hazmat - Suspicious Package - unit block of G St NW
 
This is probadly a good example the War Years that most city firefighters face today. The amount of fire activity that was once a part of these firefighters has decreased over the years. Whether it is DCFD or the FDNY. But todays firefighters are facing a different kind of War Years. Maybe they don't flow water everytime they go out the door now but they put their life saving skills to work on a daily basis. And they still fight fires.

  The other day as I traveled through Bridgeport, Ct going into the Bronx, of course I was listening to the scanner. I also had a few other Connecticut cities that I listened to. Not one fire call during that trip for any of those cities. It was all fire alarms and medical incidents. But on the return trip, I got to see their skills put to work as both Bridgeport and Fairfield (CT) firefighters removed and treated up to 70 injuried civilians from a commuter train collision. They really are professional and I wonder what we would have done without them.

  And it wasn't over with that. I had learned that those Fairfield firefighters had fought a working fire prior to that train collision. I also saw that Bridgeport firefighters battled three working fires the next day. Maybe todays firefighters aren't flowing water on a rubbish fire, or a car fire a half dozen times a night these days. And maybe some of the busier companies aren't stretching lines into jobs three or four times a night. But they are there to do whatever has to be done when the time comes. Whether it's a stabbing, a shooting, a heart attack, that car fire, or that 10-75 as the FDNY calls it. Signal 73 as the New Haven, Ct calls it, or strike the box as Boston calls it. It's all about the same thing.

  I WONDER WHAT WE WOULD DO WITHOUT THEM !!!
 
DC Fire Union fighting their fire chief with another problem - understaffing.  DCFD has dropped 53 medics since current fire chief has assumed position:

With all stabbings/shootings/fires noted above, fire union reported on May 17, 9 out of 14 (64%) ALS medic units were downgraded to BLS units, providing reduced level of EMS  incidents.  Seems incredible that only 5 ALS units would be in-service for a city like Washington DC on a given shift.

I agree that 5 medic units for DC is crazy, but aren't most engines paramedic engine companies? Don't the medics come off the engines to upgrade a BLS unit to an ALS transport unit when warranted? Didn't Chief Rubin remove many medics from transport units and upgrade to paramedic engine companies?
