Terrible reporting by Lohud and a typically non-specific statement by Yonkers P.D. spokesperson:

Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack said, "The boy was pulled from the river at 6:52 p.m. He was in stable condition at a hospital and expected to survive." "New York Police Department divers assisted in the search and recovered the victim about 8 p.m."

Headline in The Yonkers Tribune"

"Off-Duty Yonkers Firefighter David Almanza Saved Child from Hudson River"

Sadly P.D. P.I.O.'s are unable to give Firefighters credit when they save a life. They are able to give credit to P.O.'s who recover a dead body at the same incident.

Don't believe everything you read on some blog.

He didn't get credit because no witness saw him do anything. He made no statement to PD. He was actually removed from the water by a police boat after they found him drifting on a log.

If the story was true, it would have been part of the official statement.

And here it is:

YONKERS - News 12 spoke to a woman who helped save a boy from drowning in the Hudson River the night another man drowned trying to help.

Jenna Fanelli, who has been a lifeguard for seven years, says she jumped into the Hudson River Sunday night and swam 100 yards from JFK Marina after noticing 5-year-old Stephen Jones in the water. Boyce Coleman, 40, got to the boy first, but drowned trying to save him.

Fanelli managed to calm Stephen down and swim him back to shore. She says she noticed another person, possibly Coleman, struggling in the water and says she wished she could have helped him as well.

"I'm sad because he is a hero," says Fanelli. "My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family."

Coleman's cousin, Nichelle Taylor, says she is not surprised he jumped into the river to rescue a drowning child because he was always helping others.

There is no swimming allowed at the marina. Police are investigating how Stephen ended up in the water.
