Tough box to get into with the street arrangement. Assignments have changed often over the years between 75/33 and 88/38 as 3d due. 75 must have been out elsewhere for this one.

Just to how you how they used to figure these things out, 3554 was just about a tenth of a mile closer on the map for 75 than 88.

75 would travel up the Concourse to 196th St, go right to Bainbridge Ave, then left to 197th St, then right to Pond Place. However, during the school year, 196th street was closed off between Briggs and Bainbridge as a "play street" for two schools, Our Lady of Refuge and PS46. This necessitated 75 going all the way to 198th to get into Pond Place. Alternate route was Fordham Road to Bainbridge Ave, but this was not a good idea. A City bus ran north on Bainbridge and easy for 75 to get stuck behind one on the narrow avenue.

Meanwhile 88 would run up Webster ave, left on 195th street, right on Decatur and up 197th (aka "Snake Hill") to Pond Place.

The result? During the school year when, 196th was closed, a temporary order would assign E88 as 3d due (L38 as 2d before there was a L56). During the summer it was 75/33.

The old Alarm Assignment Division kept a close eye on such things. Today it's the Google or Mapquest data base making the decision and they do not address the changing conditions on the ground as closely.

Webster to 198, then left on 198 to Pond Pl, was the easiest and quickest from E48. Coming from the south, 195, 197, Decatur Ave very tight streets.

"Snake Hill" that's the first time I've heard 197th St. called that. Very interesting.

Turk,

88/38 would come up Decatur to 197th (Snake Hill) to approach the box from the east (Marion Ave) so as not to jam up Pond Place, especially if 79/37 came in from 198th as 48 did. Before the radios, they would work this stuff out in advance. After radios arrived, the dispatcher could tip them off if the situation required something different.

As 2d due, L38 would usually respond ahead of 88 in case the aerial was needed (3d due engine would stretch off 1st or second due if necessary.) It was the policy in the 18th Battalion for the truck (L27 and/or L38) to do this as there were so many single engine companies in their response areas (i.e., 42, 43, 45, 48, 61 and 97).

Mike,

195th street between Decatur and Marion was also referred to as  "Snake Hill". It really resembles a snake. Got confusing at times. Generally, people on the Fordham side called 195th Snake Hill, people on the Bedford Park side called 197th Snake Hill. There were no formal rules, as you might imagine, just local custom. Kids might argue about it (especially the 'know it all" types).

I've heard there was another Snake Hill below Fordham Rd but that was way out of my AO. Probably others too. The neighborhoods were like small towns back then, each with its own local lore.

Yes, the "Snake Hill" below Fordham Rd. is 184th St. where there was a big job about 2 months ago. That's where the the 1st floor of the east end of 365 E. 184th  is actually the 3rd or 4th of its west end.

Yes G-man it was 184 st from Webster ave to Tiebout ave. 365 E 184 st used to be 5 story OMD with P/D's up around on to Marion ave.

Mike,
Mosholu Pkwy was a BIG territorial boundary line for kids. Oddly, in my day, the area across (north) of the Pkwy was not popularly known as "Norwood" back then. More commonly known as the "204th Street" area or as "St Brendan's" for the Catholic kids. The Norwood name became fashionable in the 1980's, I believe, although it is seen on maps of the area going back to the 1890's.

I still have creases in my butt from sitting on the iron fence rails on Mosholu Pkwy South all through high school.
