Per BN18, using all hands for a fire in a 5 Story 75x50 brick

15:45 BN18- 1L/S/O stretching a second, fire is in the basement, primaries complete on the floor above, doubtful

15:46 D7- fire started on the exterior and extended in, water on the fire

15:52 D7- PWH.

I believe your run down is correct but 48/56 have a MUCH easier response then 88/38. They go left out of quarters right on Fordham and right on Hughes, all wide open streets. 88/38 have narrower streets to slow them down.

Getting thru the intersection of Fordham and Webster is a show stopper, considered perhaps the worst in the Bronx. Also, Hughes Ave is one way north bound as it approaches Fordham Rd. That's a no-no for BARB, so they would be looped around the block. Perhaps a better case for 48/56 to go east on 187th St (generally clogged with traffic also), left onto Hughes.

Right also that Both Hughes and Cambelling Aves are narrow and sometimes blocked but that is situational so I guess mileage trumps all else. There are members of this forum who worked in these fire houses and maybe they can clarify.

Anyway, 46/27 (1.3 miles) are still closer than 79/37 (1.4 ), 75/33 (1.5 from new qtrs), or 45/58 (1.4 also).
But 8060 Rock says the latter are assigned 3d due now. Don't know his source info but I will take his word for it.

BARB never fixed things from their initial screwup when it first rolled out. There are instances of companies going through other’s first due areas to get to boxes that the other company isnt even assigned on (happens in a couple places near other borough responses). A bit infuriating when it sounds like good work.

Not to get into a big drawn out discussion but I did work in this firehouse and it is basically a borderline box as you point out with distance but more times than not 48/56 get in first. Navigating those narrow streets can be very difficult, especially on shopping days and especially on holiday shopping days,

A tenth of a mile...500 odd feet. On my block that's down to the Jacobs' house and I can hear their dog barking. At 20m/hr you can cover that in 17 seconds. Seems like they should have a 1000 foot gray zone, then let CAD alternate even/odd days for the companies. Or, to make it more sporting, let a local dignitary draw numbers from a hat, flip coins, or let the Captains settle the matter in the basement.

48/56 would get no where near Fordham and Webster. Left out of quarters one block, right on E188, left on Hughes, left on E189.

But I will point out that the 18th Battalion is reknown for the cooperation of it units. If the ticket says xx/yy are first due, they get the nob or the front of the building ladder up, even if ww/zz get in first.

Case in point a few years ago...taxpayer job on 204th St...48/56 usually 3d due but out on another box...88/38 instead and stretch a line...48 arrives shortly later and given the knob by 88 out of deference. Told to me by the one of the members.

See Johnny Gage description on this forum of 88 and 45 coordinated attacks on abandoned buildings during the War Years.

Back in the 1950s, only two truck companies (27, 38) were surrounded by four single engines (42, 45, 48, 96). When higher on the ticket, the trucks rolled first out of quarters to command the street. Battalion I8 policy in those days. Unusual to see ladder companies responding ahead of the engines but made all the sense in the world for the task at hand.

Surely not the only Battalion to do such but the 18th always noted for its operations on the fireground.
