Philly has a lot of streets you could only get a chiefs car down so engines have to lead off from the corner and ladder companys have to carry ground ladders to the fire building. I was wondering for anyone reading this post if New York has neighborhoods like this. I know the street I grew up on was the same way, only room for another car to drive down the street.

Having visited my grandson when he was in Philly Eng. 12 than later when he was in Engine 54, I was fascinated by how the narrow streets in Philly effect the operations at fires in most areas. In NYC most streets are wide enough for normal operations, BUT due to illegal double parking the situation sometime does require long hand stretches and charring portable ladders to the fire building. The other things that may require this Philly type operation, is when the street is torn up due to road construction on during major snowstorms. We all have alot of things to learn from our brothers and sisters in Philly and other great Fire departments. The "Up and Over" roof team concept in Philly is another concept that has validly in other towns and cities. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.

Hey Capt, I hope your grandson is enjoying L.24. It's a great outfit. The street I grew up on wasn't even wide enough for a trash truck to get down. You had to take your trash down the alleyway to the end and pile it up there on the cross streets. My street had 70 houses (35) on each side. Getting to the rear on these type streets is a pain in the butt so thats where up and over really helps to vent the top floor. On our boxes the 1st and 3rd engine and 1st in ladder have the front of the building and the 2nd and 4th in engine and 2nd in ladder the rear. It's the companys responsibility to do that if at all possible. I don't know how many trash filled alleys we had to hump the line down to get to the rear but that was easy compared to trying to get ladders down them. You have to remember that once you get to the dwelling thats involved you then have get over a fence, usually at least 6 foot. It's a very confined space
