Bronx Community Board 6 would like to alert Beck Memorial Church that we have received complaints from local residents about the lack of maintenance of church grounds. Residents allege that because the backyard of the church is so poorly maintained, vermin have spread throughout the neighborhood, coming from the church’s backyard. Residents allege raccoons are based in the Beck Church backyard and disturb trash storage throughout the area. The Board asks that the church address the maintenance issue in the back yard.
Bronx Community Board 6 is also concerned about long-term plans for this building, as it is unclear who owns and maintains the church. Recent maintenance work done on the church was conducted by the NYC Department of Housing and Preservation. The Board is concerned that the church’s physical condition will continue to deteriorate without proper maintenance – at the expense of the city and taxpayers. We ask that the Church identify a point person responsible for the physical state of the church building. We also ask that the Church clarify the long-term plan for this building, as there does not seem to be a congregation or any regular use of the church building. Is the Church looking to sell or develop onsite programming?
