"A five-alarm fire is raging in a three-story dwelling on Chelsea Street in East Boston and the roof of the building has collapsed, officials said.
Steve MacDonald, a Boston Fire Department spokesman, said at about 2:15 p.m. that heavy fire was shooting out from the top floor of 330 Chelsea St., which is a three-story brick building.
MacDonald said firefighters were working to prevent the fire from jumping to a house next door, which is only about four feet away.
Firefighters at the scene were frantically running hoses and dousing the building at about 2:30 p.m.
It was not immediately clear if anyone has been injured.
Maria Maldonado said she was in a bathroom in the building next door when a glass window cracked and then shattered, and that firefighters ushered her out of the building.
About 200 onlookers were standing on the sidewalk on Chelsea Street as firefighters continued to battle the blaze.
The fire department posted on its official Twitter feed that the roof had collapsed.
The property is currently valued at $334,200 and its overall condition is listed as average, according to city assessing records."
