A few things I found out growing up on Long Island from1963 when we moved from Westchester:
1. Watching the Volunteers riding on the diamond deck platforms, turn out coats flapping, 3/4 boots and the helmets responding to a call was about the coolest thing to see. Until I saw them in action. Going into a near fully involves house for what seemed like an eternity to carry out a victim and then go back in after the dog. Both made it.

2. Knowing if you needed a Police Officer, if one headed to the local Volunteer Fire HQ any time of the day or night you were able to find one or at least the dispatcher could get one.

Mind you this was all before technology of cell phones.

There are still walk in Aided cases from time to time.
There are still walk in reports of accidents and fires
