Description Of Incident: Engine 3 o/s reporting heavy smoke showing from the rear of a 2.5-story wood-frame OMD. Fire in the basement w/extension to the 1st floor. Working Fire transmitted w/1 & 1 S/C. 2 L/S/O's w/quick k/d. Ladder Companies opening up. Originally reported as smoke from a structure. Two victims evacuated from structure. All searches negative w/no injuries reported.

If they used 5 and 3, I imagine Fairfield was called in to cover a Bridgeport station.
 
Ah, in the old days (mid 70's, BPT War Years) the response would have been:

E4 (Maplewoood Ave)

E5/L5 (Lower Madison Ave)

E3/ (Iranistan Ave)

Additional E/T, E1(HQS), E7(State St), L3 Iranistan, L11 State St.

E6 would not have come near that box. Fairfield E2 on Jennings  to E4.

Correct me guys, that is just off the top of my head.



 
There was no MA for this Box but its a toss up between those 2 towns depending on where the fire is in the city
 
Fire was on the west side so I am sure Fairfield went.  I'll ask my son (LT. on FFD Eng.2).  I believe E3 and T3 used to be on Norman Street; I do not remember them on Iranistan Avenue.
 
You're right, John248. The house on Norman St still stands as some kind of warehouse.

  Looks pretty good to me "3511" except, Engine 7 was on Bostwick Ave and later moved to Ocean Terrace. Ladder 3 was on Norman St and later moved to Wood Ave in a new firehouse with Eng 3 and 4.  Ladder 3 was closed down during the peak of those War Years. And Ladder 11 was a City Service Ladder (no aerial, only ground ladders) with Engine 11 at Fairfield Ave and King St. Later, Engine 11 was closed and Ladder 11 became a fully manned aerial in the quarters with Engine 7 on Ocean Ter. Both "Johnd248" and I remember the "Bridgeport War Years" very well.

Usually, when a Box in Bridgeport goes up to 5&3, M/A is usually called in to cover stations. I believe other companies move around in the city to cover as well. It depends on what companies responded as to who covers the empty stations. For example, one time Engine 10 was on a job and Stratford Engine 2 went to cover. Engine 10 is located on the East Side closer to Stratford, so I would assume that stations on the West Side of the city would be covered by Fairfield, since it's the bordering town to Bridgeport on the Western side.

Also, Willy's right(and by the way, his Bridgeport War Years stories are legendary). Engine 7 was on Bostwick by the old city dump and Engine 11/Ladder 11 were on Fairfield Ave. in Black Rock. All three companies moved to Ocean Terr. Then Engine 11 was closed. Engine 3 and Ladder 3 were on Norman St.(firehouse still exists today), Engine 4 was on Maplewood(firehouse also still exists). At HQ on Middle St. and later Congress St., it was Engine 1, Ladder 5, and Squad 5(now Rescue 5). Engine 5 was on lower Madison Ave., and later moved to HQ where it was closed down about 7-8 years ago. Engine 3, Engine 4, and Ladder 3 moved to Wood Ave. where Ladder 3 was later closed. Engine 6 and Ladder 6 were on Barnum Ave. way on the East Side.

3511 is pretty much correct though. Originally, I think a Box got 3&1 w/the Squad. Now it gets 4(1 for R.I.T.)&2 w/the Rescue. I believe the original box would look like:

In addition to E 11, E 5, and L 3, there were other companies disbanded in Bpt: E 2, E 14, and E 8 and L 12.
 
Also Engine 9, I believe. It was originally stationed w/Engine 16 on upper Madison Ave., as would have been another Ladder Company, which never amounted to anything.

At one time or another, Bridgeport had Engine's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, (No Engine 13), 14, 15, and 16; Truck's 3, 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12(Quad/City Service Ladder); Squad 5(Rescue); and Battalion's 1 and 2. Now, they're down to Engine's 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, and 16(Quint); Ladder's 5, 6, 10, and 11; Rescue 5, along with Battalion's 1 and 2, the Deputy Chief, Marine Rescue's 1, 2, and 3, a Command Vehicle, a State Haz-Mat. Decon. Unit, a Safety Officer, a Foam Unit(ex-Engine), a Training Unit(Safety), and a few Maintenance Units.

Pretty much, the population of Bridgeport in the '50's is now what it is in 2011, after fluctuating up and down over the years, yet, the department was nearly cut in half from then to now.
