I was a little kid when this fire occurred. I could see the smoke from our house in Marine Park. My dad was a newly promoted Captain working the 9x6 tour that day, covering a vacation in Marine Co. 8 (Fireboat Alfred E. Smith). Marine 8 was the first fireboat to arrive and I believe it was the first time that an F.D.N.Y. boat attacked a fire using foam. At one point early in the operation, the bumpers on The Smith caught fire. This incident was in the general vicinity where the Kings Plaza Mall is now located.
