From a good trusted source:

So the FDNY finally decided to make a Squad company on Staten Island. Squad 165 will be going into service in July 1st, 2014, it will be replacing Engine 165 which was already a haztac company housed with Tower Ladder 85 at 3067 Richmond Road.

This has certainly been needed, now hopefully they will also activate another engine company on Staten Island so Squad 165 doesn't have to spend most of its time acting as an engine!

Wow!! Finally! The location is great too, centrally located right in the middle of the island. Gonna be great seeing SQ 165 on the rundowns  :)

I bet the boys over at SQ 1 will be happy as well. No more hefty Verrazano BR. tolls lol!

"IF" it did happen the Members of the current ENG*165 may not be the SQ FFs & Officers....there is a selection process for SOC Units.

Years ago the job wanted to but a Brush Fire Unit in with E165, an appropriate place.  But it was squashed because Dr K Kelly keeps her car there, and she didn't want it stored outside the firehouse in the cold.  Instead, the BFU went to E156.  That North Shore is really notorious for large areas of brush.

Highly unconfirmed according to my sources.

Oddly enough though, BFU has very often as of late, been parked outside 165.

How long would it take to transform an engine company into a squad company?  (selection of personnel, apparatus, equipment, training) July 1 is 5 months away.

It would be good news for SI if true and New Dorp is a good location.  Would give SOC more depth.

SI is still growing rapidly and will soon need a new firehouse (engine company and maybe new Bn) around SI Mall area and maybe another truck company in a west shore firehouse.

I don't agree with the new dorp location for a squad co...the west shore area would cover the island a little better..E154 or E168 are more remote from R5 and their quarters have the room for their additional equiptment..also having a squad and a satellite E159 next to each other will create an additional void if a fire breaks out on the other side of the island.

I'd say it's long over due, it's kinda crazy to have squad 1 flying over to S.I. Each time there's a 10-75 etc.

165 is not that close to the bridge; I would think SQ 1 would still cover those 4 Battalions.

It would be a huge undertaking to relocate squad 165 to either 168 or 154 for example they would have to change battalions rearrange B.I districts etc..

Looking back at old post it does look like it may be materializing, the high pressure add on order for sandy damaged pumpers was originally for 8 regular 2000 gpm pumpers and was then changed to 7 regular 2000 gpm pumpers and a 1000 gpm squad . Was 165 engine one if the rigs that was damaged ?

Will The new squad 165 also cover division 8 Brooklyn boxes that that the 43 42 40 33 battalions cover ?
"IF' & i stress a big "IF" a SQ was formed on SI & centrally located sending them over to BKLYN would be counterproductive concerning increasing protection on SI.....JMO.

165 was not damaged in sandy.

My sources say it aint happening for a while at least, and if it did, the 165 rig and crew would maybe move to 154, and 154 would go in with 85, becuase SOC wants the Hazmat stepvan indoors like the other squads. IMO, thats a bit odd since Rescue 5 parks damn near everything outside...but this is what I was told.

I hate to say this but FDNY just might go back to an old plan & use Eng 253 as a Squad. They have a double door quarters. Currently in SI - Eng 159 responds with Sat # 5 on all 10-75. With 165 being an adjacent company, each time there is a job on the island, this would automatically generate another relocation. Both Engines then would only be programed for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd due boxes.

The other possible unit would be Eng 242 right at the foot of the VZ Bridge.  SI does not have enough companies to support a Squad, but they do have the need for the unit. If you check over the years, you will see an increase in working incidents on the island. Its too long of a ride for Squad 1.

Back in 1962 when over 100 homes burned down in SI, I was told that FD stated that SI would need another dozen new fire stations. Well since then all that have been constructed are E-165, 166, 167, 168, & the relocation of Eng 154.

While I agree that SI needs it's own Squad company, I don't see this happening for a few reasons.

1 - SI can't afford to lose an engine company in an area that is understaffed as it is. If they were to change, 165 would act as an engine 99.9% of the time.

2 - I don't think the FDNY would add companies to replace 165's workload, especially with the threat of closures the last few years.

3 - Moving companies is a big deal in today's world. While its been done countless times throughout the years, community boards and residents would put up a fight and possibly add problems the FDNY doesn't want.

JMHO

I'll believe when I see it, as of right now its a kitchen table rumor, so take it with a bolder of salt...
