Fireman William E. Lehmann suffered a fatal heart attack upon returning to quarters. Engine 272 responded to a fire in an automobile located in a garage. The fire was quickly extinguished. The fire produced extreme heat and a hose line had to be stretched a long distance. Engine 272 was back in service within an hour of the alarm. Fireman Lehmann was stricken a few minutes after arriving back in quarters. He was fifty-six years old and left a wife and four sons. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)

RIP. Never forget.

In regard to the second photo in reply # 4521 above of the ALF with the VW logo on the front.....it is the original Rig of 103-2 which became their original Rig in 1968
(when it was taken from 128 who then got an older Wooden Aerial)....in 1970 103-2 got a new. Rearmount & not long after the First Section got a new TL ......when the Second Section was disbanded in 1974 the First Section got rid of the TL & got the RM that 103-2 had.......in the mid 1960s I knew a Girl who lived right near the intersection pictured & I often walked up Schenk to Jamaica Ave. to the Bus Stop.....in the next ten yrs or so many of these bldgs in the areaburned down.

Firefighter Richard T. Sclafani of Ladder Company 103 in Brooklyn, age 37, a 10-year veteran of the FDNY, was fatally injured battling a second-alarm fire in East New York, Brooklyn.

Firefighter Sclafani and members of Ladder 103 were among the first firefighters to arrive on the scene of the fire located in a private dwelling at 577 Jerome Street, which was reported at 1:36 p.m.

They entered the basement where the fire started and began searching both for the location of the fire and to rescue any trapped occupants. During these search operations, Firefighter Sclafani became separated from his colleagues.

He was found minutes later unconscious and in respiratory arrest on the cellar staircase. Firefighter Sclafani was transported to Brookdale Hospital where he died a short time later.

Firefighter Sclafani was appointed to the Fire Department on October 23, 1994 and was currently assigned to Ladder 103 in East New York, Brooklyn. During his career, Firefighter Sclafani also worked in Squad Company 18 in Manhattan.

A resident of Bayside, Queens, Firefighter Sclafani is survived by his mother, Joan and his sister, Joanne.

Firefighter Sclafani is the 1,131st New York City Firefighter to make the Supreme Sacrifice in the Department's 142-year history.

Rest in Peace Richard. (firehouse.com)

Third "Black Sunday" Firefighter Honored
NY 1 - January 25, 2006

The third firefighter lost on what's now being called "Black Sunday" was honored Tuesday with a plaque dedication ceremony at his firehouse in Brooklyn. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta dedicated a plaque in honor of Firefighter Richard Sclafani of Ladder Company 103/Engine Company 290, 480.

Sclafani was one of three of New York's Bravest killed in two separate fires on January 23rd, 2005.

"We are still honored to have loved you and lucky to have known you," said JoAnn Sclafani-Asch, Sclafani's sister. "You are a true hero and gave the ultimate sacrifice. My brother, Firefighter Richard Thomas Sclafani, I miss you terribly. We all miss you terribly, we will always love you, and we will never forget."

Lieutenant Curtis W. Meyran and Firefighter John G. Bellew, who also died on Black Sunday, were honored with a memorial mass in the Bronx on Monday. It was attended by the families of the two fallen FDNY members, hundreds of firefighters, as well as the mayor and the fire commissioner.

The mass was followed by a plaque dedication ceremony for the two men.

Meyran and Bellew died when they were forced to jump from a burning building in the Bronx. Their deaths led the Fire Department to issue a new rope and harness system for firefighters. (Uniformed Firefighters Assoc.)

RIP. Never forget.

Loved all this great history. I see my friend Paul Hashagen Rescue 1 Retired, has done his usual great job keeping the history of the FDNY alive.
My first unit out of Proby School, in Jan. 1973, was Engine Co. 27 @ 127 Frankllyn St., on Manhattan's Lower West Side. Smokey Joe Martin started his FDNY career in Engine 27. So, I always found Smokey Joe Martin history interesting. On January 27th, I will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of my appointment to the FDNY. I still work for the FDNY as a Peer Counselor for the Counseling Services Unit and the World Trade Center Health Care Program. I am also still an active Volunteer Firefighter in the Chester N.Y. F.D. Captain Bob Rainey Eng. 26 FDNY Retired

Was originally scheduled for E285/L133. E206 got it instead and L133 didn't get established until generations later, in Queens.

House was built in 1913 - numbers lasted a long time. House closed in 1976. Was it numbered for 206 also?

^^^^^ YES.....206 was over the left hand side bay door......as for the 133 side, SQ*3 took the 3's ( there are a couple of pictures floating around with the 3s on SQ*3s Mack Pumper) & I "think" I know where the K is .....the other numbers & letters I don't know about
