The initial battalion chief remains the incident commander (unless he/she is an acting battalion chief) until the division chief arrives when the original response is augmented.  The division chief becomes the IC.  The first battalion chief may continue to work with the division chief or be given another assignment per incident management system protocols.

It is easier to become a Batt. aide if you are assigned to a house that has a chief. You might fill in when the regular aide is on vacation, etc.  Very often, when a captain is promoted to BC, he will pick his aide from his company (where he was captain).  This may take a while because he/she has to wait until they have a permanent spot.
