two questions. 1) what does it mean when the dispatcher says for example "Queens 57 signal box ####?" 2) what does "trucks are opening up" mean?

Trucks opening up means ventilation, entry, and search. Pulling ceilings, venting windows, looking for extension of fire.

Now it goes from 1 (dead) to 4 "walking wounded" as if someone just coughed once from smoke - 4 levels of severity were meant to match EMS codes.

Back when FDNY had  only 3 sub-codes, it was: 1=dead, 2=life threatening/critical injury, 3=non life threatening.

Sort of like ordering your steaks: 1=well done, 2=medium, or 3=rare.

Brooklyn currently has a fourth alarm operating at box 1289 for a fire at 613 5th Avenue, near 17th Street.  Units assigned are from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Bronx.  Question is: how often is there a fire with units from four boroughs?  Has there ever been an incident, aside from 9/11, when all five boroughs responded to one fire?

Just did some digging on that day that SI had the 5th & 6th.

The 4th alarm assignment consisted of engines from Manhattan, Queens & Bronx, obviously SI & Brooklyn units were already there. How rare would that be - fire was @ 5th alarm (http://nycfire.net/forums/index.php/topic,6977.0.html)

I don't know for sure John, but possibly the Hotel St George fire downtown Brooklyn in 1995. I was in R1, we responded as a second Rescue (R2 was already on the scene). R3 also responded. The fire in the residential high rise was eventually (I believe) made a separate fire to make things a little more manageable for the I.C..

Back in 1962, in Staten Is there was a brush fire that destroyed over 100 homes - even NJ companies were on the scene.

Thanks, Garrett.  Now that I think about it, I am sure the Hotel St. George fire fits the bill.
