EXCELLENT that this Fire Boat is being preserved....John D. McKean an FDNY FF / Marine Engineer in whose honor the Boat is named for was Killed LOD in an explosion while operating on the FDNY Fire Boat McClellan in 1953.... his Son John D. "Jack" McKean Jr. RIP was as a FF a Charter Member of LAD*175 (with Howie Carlson ) then a FF in LAD*120 then a LT in LAD*54 then a LT in R*3 & also was a partner in a FF Tool Company https://www.raynordandrea.com/obituary/John-McKean .....two more McKean Family Generations have joined the FDNY for a total of four McKean's.......I always thought that since the Boats namesake was an FDNY Member that after the original boat was de commissioned that his name should be then carried on another FB such as the John D. McKean 2 but this did not happen....at least a restoration of this boat will keep the Tribute going..... History.. http://marine1fdny.com/mckean_new.php
Congrats to the guys on the McKean on making the registry. I'm always impressed they got their insurers OK to dock where they are these days, when we got Fire Fighter we were looking at the same area but our insurance said no way no how due to ice flow risks.
In 1955 prior to the Mckean going into service, my younger brother and I spent an over-nighter on board compliments of our father Engineer Ed Byrnes. It was quite an adventure for a couple of eleven and nine year old boys. My father eventually went on to serve as both a Lieutenant and a Captain on board her prior to making Btn. Chief in 1971.
