Firefighters' tests done on some "Fast Food" building have shown that once the fire reaches the "Truss Loft", just under the roof, due to the way they are often built using light weight wood truss components, can collapse in under 2 minutes once the fire is burning in the lightweight truss components. Of particular concern is the connection points of the wood trusses, often held together with "Gang Nails" of light weight metal that only penetrates the wood of the trusses by 1/4" to 1/2" of an inch or less. When heated the metal chore of the gang nail and the wood around it chars and the truss can collapse rapidly. Often the best tactics, once the trusses are involved are, to remove the life hazard including the firefighters, out of the collapse zone and hit the fire with an aggressive exterior attack. Remember it started burning before you were called and before you left the firehouse. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired
