Boston mayor appointed Deputy Chief Joe Finn to be new Commissioner and Fire Chief.  Great choice and good idea.  CHIEF Finn has over 30 years experience and is well qualified and respected.  He served in the Marines and also has a son on the job.  I like him and think he will be an outstanding leader of the Boston Fire Department.

Mayor is also combining Commissioner and Fire Chief jobs.  Leo Stapleton also served in dual roles.

Congratulations, Chief Finn. Thanks for posting, mack.

Also, I never knew "The Commish" served in dual roles as well.

He must have his hands full with both of those jobs in a city that size !! Interesting concept though, the commissioner is usually a civilian appointee while the chief is usually an appointed sworn member

If I am not mistaken Commish/Chief was common in Boston and it was not until the last Commish that the roles were split. The dual role went back to Stapelton and before.

Most Boston Fire Commissioners served independent of the Chief of Department (or Chief Engineer).

2 Boston Fire Commissioners were also concurrently Chiefs of Department (Stapleton, Pierce)
3 Chiefs of Department later became Fire Commissioners (Grady,Paul, Christian)
1 Chief of Department LODD (Cheswell)
2 Chiefs of Department were father/son (Stapleton, Stapleton)

Chief Finn is a leader.  He had the Beacon Street fire.  A real gutsy guy - Chief Finn was still responding in when the Maydays were transmitted at the fire.  Immediately, he directed focus on the Mayday rescue efforts, ensured everyone was off the upper floors, ordered a 3rd and 4th alarm, directed placement of multiple alarm companies and then made the difficult call not to re-enter the building.

After Ray Flynn was elected mayor the first thing he did was appoint Leo Stapleton to Commissioner. Flynn's predecessor Kevin White had really screwed the jakes, and the cops also.
