From the NYFIREWIRE Group:

Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh will cut the ribbon on a new state-of-the-art FDNY firehouse for Marine Company 4, located at Building 634 at the EMS Training Academy at Fort Totten, Queens on Thursday, October 6, at 11 a.m.

“This new home for Marine 4 will allow the FDNY to continue its modernization of FDNY Marine Operations,” said Acting Commissioner Kavanagh. “With this new space, members of Marine 4 can continue to execute their mission – performing water rescues and responding to fires along our city’s waterfront from the Long Island Sound to the Harlem and East Rivers.”

FDNY worked closely with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to secure a new home at Fort Totten. The previous quarters for Marine 4 were shared with FDNY Fire Prevention and EMS Training units. Twenty-five years ago, Marine 4 responded with two firefighters in a 19-foot surplus US Navy boat with a brush fire pump. Since that time, their responses have tripled as they cover over 40-square miles, extending from the 59th Street Bridge in the East River to Spuyten Duyvil on the Harlem River to Execution Rocks on the Long Island Sound. Last year, Marine 4 responded to 135 vessels in distress, 81 water rescues and 29 fires, pulling 23 people from the water and removing 95 people from harm.
