"KFD274", For some reason I wasn't able to download it. I don't think it's something wrong, I just don't have the skill (or brains) to know how to do it. I sure would like to know what company had three sections. It must be during the War Years, Right ?
  Can you cheat a little and let us know ?

Engine 30, the curent home to the Fire Museum, unless you count the Big House in Jamaica, Queens with 3 separate engine companies. My uncle was born next door to E30 and went on to be a Battalion Chief.

My PC could not open it but I knew the answer.  BTW, does anybody know what ladder company was in that house? ??? ;)

There was no ladder company with E30, not even on a combination basis.

  They were at Engine 30 from Oct. 1, 1914 to April 26, 1915 while Varick St. was being widened for a new subway line and Ladder 8's two bay firehouse was cut down to one bay. Also Ladder 8's second section which was disbanded during the firehouse "makeover" was later reorganized at E30's firehouse on April 17, 1917 and remained there until July 19, 1917 when they returned to 14 N. Moore St. and remained in service until May 1, 1918. ;)

So at that firehouse, it was Engine 30 section 1 (30-1), 30 section 2 (30-2), and 30 section 3 (30-3). Is that right ? I just thought that the second sections were added only for the War Years. So maybe I've been wrong about this.  ??? ???

Second sections have been around since just before the begining of the 20th century. Many Manhattan companies had 2nd sections going all the way up to 1947 and even 1957 (L22, E76). Many firehouses were actually built with 2nd bays for 2 sections like E7/L1, E30(3 bay 3 sect.), E31, E76 (on W. 102nd St.), E80 (L23 moved in 1918), E91/L43, E93/L45, E264/E328/L134 (E264 was 2 sections until 1939 when 2nd section became E328), L8 (was later cut down to 1 bay), L17 (E60 moved in 1948), L26 (52 E. 114th St./ E58 moved in 1948), L28 (E69 move in 1917), L35 on W. 63rd St (E40 moved in 1918).

Thanks Vbcapt and G-man, I had no idea of that and thought second sections only came about because of the busy War Years. I guess it's true. You're NEVER Too old to learn something. Thanks Guys.

Separate from the concept of 2nd or 3rd sections, some engine companies used to run  with 2 pieces (i.e. pumper and hose wagon) on some or all of their boxes.  Do any of them (besides the engine/satellite responses) still do that  ?

The specialized units have second pieces.  Examples:

Haz Tec engines have second pieces like E44; http://www.fdnytrucks.com/files/html/manhattan/e44.htm

Foam engines like 260 have a Foam carrier:

DeCon companies like E 251, have Mack MR shower units

Purple K companies like E326, have Purple K trucks

Engines like 156, have brush fire units

And so on....

  The last 2 pc. (Eng & HW) companies were still around in the late 60's in areas that required long stretches because of piers and distant hydrants like waterfront areas of Manhattan, Red Hook, Sunset Park, Greenpoint & LIC.

I think it is possible that FDNY used to run with multiple engine company sections in Staten Island during the brush fire seasons (spring/fall) back in the 60's.  My dad spent some time in in Staten Island units that were designated 2nd sections, brush fire patrol and maybe even 3rd sections.  They did not have the brush fire units yet.  From my memory, they pulled 2nd pieces and spares (the old CD units) and put them in service as extra engine sections manned with OT.  E 164 always seemed to have several engines operating out of their Huguenot firehouse on dry, windy days.  They also had units relocated from Bklyn and Manhattan.  http://www.ladder18fdny.com/images/frank-proceller-pics/47_NYFD_Staten-IslandI_May-.jpg from Ladder 18's site has pictures of Engine 17 relocating to operate out of E164's quarters.  There were larger undeveloped areas, fewer hydrants and fewer SI companies back then.
