When the Satellites were first established as part of the Super Pumper System, there were three of them.  They were each manned by two (2) firefighters/tour and were not paired with an engine company.  They were supervised by a Satellite Officer (Lieutenant) who was driven by a firefighter detailed from the Super Pumper.  The officer and firefighter responded in a station wagon (before Suburbans, etc.) and carried a manifold in addition to the manifold carried by each Satellite.  The Satellite Officer was quartered with Satellite #1.

According to Griffiths "Operational Reference Guide" here goes. Satellite carries 2500' of 5-inch hose with 4 1/2" connections. In addition they carry 400' of 3 1/2". Manning comes from its parent engine company. Pg 83 FDNY Ops Ref
