RADIO IS Bearcat SDS-100. I have downloaded latest DB but can not find the new system being used by FD. It replaced the 800MHz DOITT Trunked System. TG's are the same, but system is different. Where do I get this DB info to upload into radio, if not from RadioReference.com. Again the software says I have downloaded the latest DB, and of course it will not download anything further.

Correct. I can understand the transmissions but there is alot of static. This is a well known issue, that this radio is excellent for digital but can be problematic for UHF. Apparantly they haven't perfected a radio that receives both types of transmission equally well.
The ultimate answer is an outdoor external antenna for the scanner (which I don't have myself unfortunately). If not outside an attic antenna will do well. My 996P2 is an excellent scanner but also suffers from static at times due to the lack of an outdoor antenna. I purchased my used HT1250 LS+ to monitor FDNY UHF channels and it rarely has static being a two-way. It is only programmed to receive not transmit. I live in central NJ and its usually crystal clear on all 5 boroughs. The 996 not always.

Thats because the radio reference database relies on people to find these talkgroups and submit them to be added. I don't think the same talkgroups are used with the new system. With the majority of the new talkgroups being encrypted it doesn't matter because you can't hear them anyways therefore you'll never know what talkgroups are what.

i'm on the south shore also and have the same opinion...... miss the 154.xxx VHF. Born and raised in Flushing, Queens it was always great hearing everything like Newark, Jersey City, Nassau, Westchester and occasionally beyond.

Look up and download the NYCICN system, however it's pretty worthless for anything FDNY since they have pretty much encrypted it all including the DARS system

THANK YOU Mike M.
But let me ask this: Suppose Div. 8 (my area Lol) is at the scene of a 3rd Alarm. I use to hear Division 8 directing FD operations there by monitoring TGID 4560, on the system above. . Are you saying that they have encrypted this for simple fireground transmissions at the scene of a fire???!!! O,r would these transmissions be found elsewhere now? Please give info if you know. Thanks.

Gee.....if they will not let us hear ordinary fire traffic transmissions---------then PD will certainly be encrypted-------apparently for the press too................so that the Desk Sargent at each precinct will be your new crime reporter and when you FOIL the actual radio transmission recordings to find out what really happened, you will get a compromised version after waiting five years.

Communism has arrived.

The radio in this ad in NOT the Uniden SDS 100 but i am curious if anyone on here can interpret what frequencies it receives & would it be useful if FDNY freq. become encrypted ?....... https://www.ebay.com/itm/2836752410...MI7dP_84768gIVUeftCh0-_wZoEAEYASABEgIehPD_BwE
This only uses cell signals to transmit and receive audio. This will not receive and "regular" radio frequencies. This would only receive feeds used on the zello app which I don't believe there are any FDNY feeds.

^^^^^^^ Thank You i don't know too much about radios .....i thought maybe this was something useful to monitor FDNY but i guess not....... the search continues.

I didn't know that fireground transmissions were a matter of national security that warranted encrypting them?!!

The SDS can be very difficult to program. Then again you have the option just to plug in your zip code and you are monitoring the radio in 8 seconds
and if you live in one of the 5 boroughs, you'll get 1,000+ channels of everything else in at least a 10 mile radius, even CT. and NJ depending where you live.

re: SDS100: Radio reception is horrible in the area near Queens College in Flushing - for all 5 boroughs; Yet, NYPD which is only about 5-6 Hz below (their 470's compared to our 480's) comes in very clear. Just wondering why, and if an outdoor antenna will actually help.

I have an older Radio Shack handheld scanner that I use whenever I am in NYC.
But even with using my outside car mounted 800 band antenna, my reception is NOT very good.
I don't begin to pick up the FDNY until I am within 4-5 miles of the city, including the Citywide Channel.

As reported here, I too have received the NYPD SOD channel somewhat better than the FDNY channels.

BUT NOTHING BEATS those older 154...mhz FDNY channels, with the repeater system that was used.
I could easily pick up all of the boros from at least 50 miles outside of NYC, in my case from Bridgeport (CT) on down to the city.
At times, I would even pick them up here at the Ole' Homestead about 125 miles away.

These days here at my place, the local police dept went to a new digital 800 radio system.
That required me to buy two new scanners.
I bought a Uniden BCD996P2 for home use, and also a handheld BCD325P2 for when I'm in the Buff Mobile here in the local neighborhoods.

BUT - GUESS WHAT ?
I CAN NOT PICK UP THE LOCAL POLICE AT MY HOME.
WHY ?
Supposedly because I live just about halfway in between TWO of the Repeater Sites and because of that, I HEAR NOTHING at all.
I DO pick up the local PD using my handheld once I am a mile or so from my home.
But with that, the range is limited.
I can barely pick up the PD about 5 - 7 miles outside of the city

Another buff friend who lives within a mile of my house has the same problem.
He then bought himself another home scanner - a UNIDEN SDS200 and he tells me it picks up our local police.
So I had to do the same thing.
I have NOT put it in service yet because I have no clue on how to program it.

My buddy has told me that he will program it for me.
BUT, I've been holding off because our local fire dept is also supposed to go to that similar 800 digital phase 2 system.
That was supposed to have been done by now but that HASN'T HAPPENED YET.
Why ? Because there is a huge delay in getting the parts shipped.
Of course I am very HAPPY about that.

Our local fire dept is currently on the 154... mhz very similar to what the FDNY was using, with a repeater system and separate talk around channel as well.
I remember when the FD here went to it around 1990 or so.
"I HAILED IT AS AN EXCELLENT MOVE" as they went from a low band frequency with No Repeater or Talk Around channel to that 154 excellent system (154.205 mhz).

Ah yea, if we could only have those GREAT DAYS BACK AGAIN.

I remember the old days in the 70's if the conditions were just right with the "skip" you could pick up FDNY on my Regency crystal scanner in Boston! Would pick up some of that "war years" action. Nowadays I cannot monitor my son's department via Broadcastify, they are encrypted.

Is this a page from "Sentinal?" There's no Column heads if I wanted to copy any of these....I'm lost/

The SDS100 and related products have become $1,000 Paper Weights*---as everything you might want to listen to has been--or soon will be---ENCRYPTED . You'll just here Chirping Birds for the Division TG's, EMS Notification and others, if you hear anything. I think the new $8,000/radio X 50,000 radios that are now being distributed and use a different modulation system as well as CIA Level Encryption. No Chirping Birds even. You'll get Taxi & Limo junk, NYC Transit Authority buses and trains, Parks Dept., Sanitation and some other unimportant city agencies---but everything will soon be history. Now if we could just get rid of that NWS KWO-35......I am ready to listen to myself! lol!
What is still worth listening to and still in, "non-trunked analog form FM", can be tuned with a $30 Baofeng Ham Radio. License needed to transmit on those Ham Frequencies in 2M, 70cm bands. Do not transmit anywhere else! No License to Listen!!!
*Manhattan NYC Style---added charge for Static Sauce-Endless Tape Loop sound effects. Lol again.

GET YOUR SOFTWARE PACKAGE LOADED ON YOUR PC. LOOK FOR UPDATE DATABASE. under USA/NY/NYC etc. UPDATES EVERY MONDAY. FIND THE STATIONS OR SERVICES (AGENCIES)YOU WANT TO MONITOR. BREAK IT DOWN BY NAMING EACH 'FAVORITE' OR BANK, old term---DIFFERENTLY. CHOOSE 'SELECT ALL' AND AFTER GIVING FAVORITES A DESCRIPTIVE NAME (Fire TG's, EMS, Emerg. Mangement) CHOOSE WRITE TO SCANNER. FROM THE SCANNER CHOOSE ALL FAVORITES OR TURN THEM ALL OFF AND PUT BACK ONE FAVORITE (BANK) AT A TIME. Have questions? Leave them in this topic area---but I am still learning.

I went nuts with that Sentinel software combined with the programming. Taking a break with a strong Irish coffee helped!
What finally worked for me was to make each NYPD division a "Favorite" and each FDNY borough and the H/T freqs. a Favorite as well. Then, I just choose which favorites I want to monitor each time. However, I can't receive any FDNY borough transmissions - only background hash.
SO, everything except FDNY is on my SDS100 and all FDNY borough freqs. are on my Baofengs. I have 3 BF-9 V2Ns. With the large batteries, ext. spkr/mic. and good antenna, they all cost under $250 for the three. Got my Tech, lic. years ago, (actually have to find the lic.) I forget my call letters - (I think WPIBO) never went for a General. A few friends have an Extra Lic.
Anyway....my programming is a bit crude and fundamental but it works. If someone could either make or find a good YouTube video showing exactly how to find and add TG's to the DB would be great for us beginners. The SDS100 is a great radio although the battery doesn't last as long as advertised - probably because of the color screen etc.
If Uncle Willie has a SDS200, the programming is easier than I thought, and I would guess is programmed the same as the SDS100.
OH, and I tried an external mag. mount antenna on top of my SUV, and out my attic window - still crappy reception of the FDNY boro freqs.

However, I have no problem with any of the adj. NYPD freqs. on SOD, Citywide or individual Division freqs. (VERY strange!)
