"No Mike, that was Santa Clause".

"fdce54", It takes a lot more than Santa Clause carrying a camera to fool you. But they did fool Mike. He thought it was him at a job carrying a camera.

Just like happens every day in today's world . . . right.  ::)  Oh for the simpler, less correct, less OSHA'd world.  ;)

I saw this when it was on TV after it was made then saw it again in 1972 when one of the Chauf School instructors played it on a 16 mm projector during lunch.....the shrill sound is a "Buckeye" it was an exhaust whistle used on Rigs during the Cold War so that civilians would not mistake the Rig siren for an Air Raid Siren these were phased out after the Cold War threat subsided & in the mid fifties as Rigs started to have air brakes as opposed to hydraulic brakes the Air Horn came on the scene......in the video when they arrive at the job you see the Truck guys wearing shirt sleeves or just a short jacket & carrying soda acid extinguishers & 2 hooks no turnout coats ....no radio so one of the guys on the floor below leans out the window twirling his finger around signaling to start water....also horsecock (2 1/2) was the standard hose stretched & a length of rubber 1 1/2 being carried by one of the relief ENGs for wash down. In regard to the Buckeye there were commercially made models the Job attached to some Rigs but anybody having a copy of WNYF 2nd Issue 1952 there is an article from back then on how to make one .....could you imagine the FDNY of today allowing a FF to publish an article on how to install a major modification which he himself states that "if not operated properly could damage the Rig" ....to say nothing about a possible hearing loss suit....the author though certainly seemed like a craftsman to be able to think this up & diagram it....i hope somebody can post it here along w/a commercial Buckeye ad w/a picture.

Chief I always wondered what that strange sounding siren was coming from the rigs of the FDNY. I'm sure they were used in other places too. But as a kid going back to the 1950s, the only place I ever remember hearing that was if I saw a fire on the news in NYC (on black and white TV).

Also, I'd like to thank Jamie for posting these videos too. They are classics and quite a collection.

Those videos teamed up with Mike's pictures (www.fdnysbravest.com), on this web site, and you have yourself "The Perfect Package Deal".

a little more info on the BUCKEYE. Back in the forties ladder 107 had a I believe a 1938 or 39 Walter tractor with I believe an American Lafrance 75 wooden stick that was buckeye equipped. Basically the buckeye was operated by pulling a handle that came up through the floor boards on the officers side of the rig that operated a valve that diverted the exhaust gases from the muffler to the buckeye. Extended use could cause the exhaust valves in the engine to burn due to the excessive back pressure. It was LOUD and SHRILL. When L107 was headed east on Atlantic Ave. coming into City Line you could hear then loud and clear from E225 quarters as they turned onto Atlantic Ave. almost a mile away.

For historical purposes only, not recommended to try on a contemporary apparatus.

Site member "Patrickfd" sent me this video. A Classic from Ladder Co 43. I also think Chief JK "68jk09" father worked Ladder 43.

Of course the film is old and may be hard to make out at times, but I'm sure you'll get the idea.

Thanks Pat.
