3/27/26 Bronx 3rd Alarm 10-66 Box 3514

In Ken Little's book on the history of Chicago firehouses-

Quoting a neighbor 0f Engine Company 99 (built 1904) 3042 South Kedvale Avenue.....

"I've lived here for twenty-five years and we've had only two fires in this block, and both have been in the fire house."

House built 1904, double bay for single engine, steamer/HW. L37 organized four years later.
Below photo of members daily exercising horses from cover of their centennial booklet.
I will take advice as to how to rotate the photo.

Question to anyones knowledge is this the first time a fire has occurred in a firehouse?
E206 - 1907
E86 - 1930 (pilot house on fireboat)
Marine 5 - 1965
E94 - 1968
E245 - 1968 (during renovation)
E207 - 1971 (roof on NYPD side of building)
E290 - 1973
E294 - 1974
Marine 5 - 1978 (again)
R1 - 1985 (collapse of exposure building)
E80 - 2008
E65 - 2013
E163 - 2024

These burned while occupied - vacant stations burned before demolition not included.

Also ENG*24....LAD*40 ....SQ*41....also some more not reported.

Also Engine 271. Several probies were pulling up to the firehouse for the first time from proby school. The company was out and the door locked and the kitchen was well involved. Our unit was responding second due and the diesel tank dropped off the rig. We finally stalled out a few blocks later. The tank disappeared (this was the late seventies during the fuel crisis). The members of Engine 271 came across the tank several weeks later while they were out inspecting buildings. The steel being produced at that time was terrible.

How will this work for their response area? Will companies be relocated in and rotated as necessary?
When this house was renovated if a few years ago Engine 79 relocated with Engine 62, L37 went to a cage outside Ladder 46. Response areas were adjusted accordingly, ie., E48 responded first due to Bedford Park, 79 still first due to Norwood, L37 to boxes around the reservoir, etc,.

Nearby companies (Es 75, 81, 88, Ls 32, 33, 38) moved up on the assignment card as necessary. In the case of overlap of relocators the higher original assignment holds.
Example: Bronx High School of Science (Box 8771). Normal All Hands assignment
79 81 48 75 62. 37 46 56 33
Adjusted assignment,
81 48 75 79 62. 37 46 56
It'll be interesting to see what plays out now.

E55's quarters has caught fire, twice no?

The house was completely renovated only a few years ago.
With all the money spent on the renovation, sprinklers should have been installed.
Practice what you preach.
Engine 249 and Ladder 113's quarters had sprinklers installed during its renovation about 30 years ago.
